The importance of liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels and the technology that enables their operations is steadily growing. Hence, in addition to professional interest, the general public also displays a considerably large interest in this issue. Today LNG carriers belong to the category of the most technologically developed vessels and therefore managing these vessels requires not only the general knowledge but also the specific knowledge relating to their cargo handling systems. To ensure the safe and economical transport of LNG by sea and to minimize the risk of fire or explosion it is necessary to understand the properties of LNG and nitrogen, an inert gas used in all phases of the carriage and transfer of liquefied gas. The subject of this research is the overall process of nitrogen management in daily operations on board LNG carriers. The aim of the research is to explain, evaluate and define the various applications of nitrogen systems on LNG carriers.

Contemporary tourism trends are marked by a number of elements that enrich the product of the tourism and travel industry and contribute to the satisfaction of visitors, while respecting the principles of sustainable tourist destination management. This paper analyzes the possibilities for the implementation of charter flights and the introduction of electric cars with the aim of connecting maritime and continental tourism in Croatia on the principles of sustainable development of tourist destinations. For the purpose of proving the set hypotheses, research has been carried out involving all the county tourist offices as the target points of the survey, as each of them covers a range of local self-government units, and can be considered a representative sample of tourism in the entire territory of Croatia. The survey was conducted through questionnaires with the office directors. The analysis of their responses suggests the need to approach and merge maritime and continental tourism through a new tourist product by introducing charter flights and electric cars. Based on the results of the research and in the opinion of the respondents, the introduction of charter flights would lead to the extension of the tourist season, the expansion of the tourist offer and thus the greater pleasure of visitors themselves, increase of employment, increase of local government revenues and synergy effect of economic development. Respondents believe that the introduction of alternative electric vehicles would significantly contribute to environmental protection and rationalization of operations due to considerably lower costs (gas emissions into the environment, the possibility of co-financing through EU funds or central and local government funds, maintenance costs, etc.). The introduction of charter flights and the usage of electric cars from the airport to the destination would significantly contribute to the achievement of better tourism-related results and the increase of the competitiveness of Croatian tourism as a whole.

Deeply connected to the sea, its greatest resource, Peniche, from its early development has become over the years one of the main references in nautical tourism, with surf being its main sport practice. In fact, nowadays, surf is the main source of income of the municipality. The popularity of this destination as a standard for nautical sports has gained such a dimension that has attracted the attention of one of the world’s leading nautical sports events, the Rip Curl Pro. Since 2009 (the first time this event took place in that city) to the present day, the impacts of this event have not been only felt in the Western region but also throughout the country.

The transitional period of implementation of the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) expired on July 1st, 2018. As for this date onward, vessels of 3000 GT or more subject to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention and engaged in international voyages, must be fitted with an official ECDIS system. The Convention furthermore requires mandatory possession of navigational equipment as an adequate back-up. In case that independent system is used for this purpose, there is no further obligation for a vessel to possess traditional paper navigational charts and it can be considered as paperless. Beside paper charts, this term also implies digital nautical publications and probably an electronic ship’s log in the foreseeable future. The interpretation of ECDIS differs considering particular rank of an Officer of the Watch (OOW) and its engagement towards the system. The system should be accepted by OOWs as true end-users. The proposed paper elaborates opinions and standpoints of decisive end-users towards the system, its role as a primary navigational means, and the fact that traditional navigation conduct is replaced by digital means. For this purpose a survey between OOWs was conducted focusing on their answers to respective questions. The sample size allowed for the observation of opinions over several years and the definition of the ECDIS acceptance level. Results are presented and discussed together with proposals of new activities which have to be carried out to improve the safety of navigation by the ECDIS system and its further development.

Sailing of tanker ships in specific navigation areas, such as narrow waterways, is a particularly delicate navigational venture, where one of the greatest related risks is grounding. Grounding of a tanker in a narrow waterway is an event that can cause many adverse consequences, the most important among them being environmental pollution, explosion or onboard fire damaging the ship, injuries and lost lives of crewmembers. Factors affecting the safety of tanker navigation in narrow waterways can be principally divided into geometric, traffic, meteorological and oceanological factors, ship design factors and marine equipment faults as well as human-related factors. With a view to minimizing the possibility of grounding or contact, the assessment of risks is to be considered indispensable and primarily aimed at influencing accident probability and/or consequence factors as its most important objective. The paper analyses the safety of tanker navigation in narrow waterways based on the assessment of risk of grounding. The event influential probability factors that are taken into consideration comprise the narrow waterway category, meteorological and oceanological conditions, traffic density and VTS coverage of the navigable area, while factors such as ship speed, bottom type, hull quality and loading condition are factors related to consequences. Using the risk assessment matrix, estimated values used for evaluation of the safety of tanker navigation in narrow waterways are assigned to probability factors and factors of consequences.

In the proposed paper, structural analysis of relevant parameters of the maritime coastal line ZadarPreko (Croatia) was conducted. Passenger and vehicle traffic are observed during a three-year period. Based on the official data processing, parameters of the existing line capacity utilization are determined on a monthly basis. The passenger and vehicle turnover is presented as well as the utilized and nonutilized carrying capacities of the line. The highly seasonal nature of the turnover is emphasized as a result of tourist season, including the discussion on the line unprofitability for the shipping company which is directly due to the seasonality. In this connection, the need for a Government grant is further discussed with a view to maintaining sufficient carrying capacities and line frequency. For further research, a conceptual system is suggested to be based on computer simulations aimed at optimizing the operation of the terminal.

This paper focuses on the application of two approaches: Business Process Redesign (BPR) and Discrete Event Simulation (DES) in an attempt to enhance the basic logistics processes in inland container terminals. The goal of the paper is to identify the weaknesses and potential problems in the execution of current logistics processes, as well as to redesign such identified weaknesses and problems. The main contribution of the paper is to show how DES and BPR can be used in restructuring of container logistics processes in inland container terminals. Its original feature is a novelty, a holistic approach in rationalization of container logistics processes in inland intermodal terminals, creating models of the current (AS-IS) and improved (TO-BE) states. Models show that DES and BPR represent an easily accessible and effective tool in the analysis of terminal processes in container terminals. Therefore, it can be efficiently used for monitoring the current situation, identification of weak spots in a particular system and for creating any necessary preconditions for improvement of business processes.

The Medieval statutory regulations at the east coast of the Adriatic Sea, especially in Dubrovnik, that are analysed in this article are related to sailor’s service, agreement of service, types of contracts, single voyage contracts, time contracts and profit share, sailors’ working responsibilities, breach of contractual obligations etc., all of which enable an interesting insight and open the question of possible parallels with contemporary seafarers’ labour relations. In 2006, the International Labour Organisation adopted the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) which sets out terms and conditions for employment of seafarers, regarding the minimum age for employment, medical conditions to be met by seafarers, employment of seafarers through an appropriate system with no charge to the seafarers, entitlement to wages in accordance with employment agreements, etc. Special focus is dedicated to their hours of work and rest in order to ensure safety of navigation. MLC entitles seafarers to adequate compensation in cases of injury, loss or unemployment arising from ship’s loss or foundering, in addition to the right to free repatriation of seafarers, except in cases of serious breach of seafarer’s contractual obligations.

The Zrmanja River estuary is a semi-enclosed bay immersed in a karstic landscape of the eastern Adriatic coast. It represents a highly indented system which includes part of the Zrmanja River, downstream from the Jankovića Buk, the Novigrad and the Karin Seas, and the strait connecting the Novigrad Sea with the Velebit Channel. The very fact that the estuary of the Zrmanja River is located in the karst area makes this system highly vulnerable and susceptible to possible anthropogenic pressures. Preservation of such and similar water systems relies on the knowledge of the main factors that govern its physical, chemical, biological and geochemical features. Due to the lack of geochemical data for the Zrmanja River estuary, a comprehensive study was carried out to explain sedimentation processes and the origin of the material within this estuary and provide additional knowledge necessary for its sustainable use and preservation. This paper, therefore, attempts to summarize the obtained data, focusing on the main natural and anthropogenic factors that define the geochemistry of the Zrmanja River estuary.

The ECOSUSTAIN Project represents a joint transnational action towards the maintenance of biodiversity and natural ecosystems by means of stronger management and networking of protected areas, that is National and Nature Parks, in the Mediterranean region. The overall objective of the Project is to improve the water monitoring process of protected areas through supporting scientific, technical and management knowledge in tackling the problem of incoherent and segregated management of protected areas as self-sustained units, which is believed to hamper the protection and promotion of Mediterranean natural resources, as well as the maintenance of biodiversity and natural ecosystems.
