This article examines hand- and computer-written patient records in a social medical institution and points out the importance of mediality for communicative action. The analyses suggest that certain functional qualities of mediality (e. g. finality, fixation) are influential for communicative action. Research on such questions is still in its infancy, but already shows that such results are significant for professional practice, because the mediality of the documentation can be either conducive or obstructive to the respective communicative needs.

Since 2015, SPRINT(-Dual)-classes provide a supplement for existing training measures within the transition sector in vocational education and training in Lower Saxony. As a response to the increasing number of refugees, the project includes the acquisition of language skills. This article intends to give a critical analysis of the SPRINT-Project. The interview results with teachers demonstrate that one to two years is an insufficient time frame for reaching the necessary language competency and a professional orientation. Moreover, the existing structures in the transition sector as well as further educational and professional options are too complex and non-transparent.

Based on a presentation during the „Hochschultage Berufliche Bildung 2017“ in Cologne, the contribution probes the importance of written language in commercial activities. A subject-oriented research design is outlined which attempts to adopt the perspective of the acting persons. This allows analysing the individual actors as well as their operational context. How do they create individual customer-correspondence? This contributes to the methodical discourse of work-related linguistic research as well as on commercial vocational education and training research.

This paper aims to discuss some relevant evaluation criteria and suggestions for the improvement of text-based chatbots for tourism-specific German as Foreign Language classes in an academic setting. After outlining some findings of the research on chatbot-based language learning and some requirements for future professionals in tourism, the paper offers an analysis of two chatbots (i. e. Duolingo Bots and Lufthansa BestPrice) considering their use for touristic German learning at university. The selected findings show that it is still problematic for chatbots to switch the chat partners’ role and to give high-quality feedback on users’ input.

Processes of interdisciplinary multimodal writing are of growing importance for professional communication because texts produced and used in these domains increasingly incorporate written and pictorial elements. This is, among others, due to them being produced across disciplines that conventionally draw on various types of pictures (photos, drawings, diagrams etc.). This article focusses on the results of Holste’s study (2019) on interdisciplinary multimodal processes of text composition in public tendering procedures, that are relevant for teaching interdisciplinary multimodal processes of writing. On this basis, a didactic concept is developed for online seminars at universities that aim to convey the aforementioned skills.

This article deals with young refugee’s experiences at vocational schools in Germany. It focuses on the aspect of language proficiency in German and the challenges that come with entering vocational schools in Germany for language learners. First results are presented on the basis of a qualitative empirical research project in which young refugees attending vocational schools were interviewed. Based on their reports, it is discussed how multilingualism can be dealt with in a way that promotes learning instead of preventing it.

In a comparative study in mixed-methods design, this research project examines the commonalities and differences in the intercultural comparison of mathematical competence. To enable this comparison, the study was carried out in a three-group design with a group of Arabic-speaking test persons and two different groups of German-speaking test perons. The study has not yet been completed. The focus of this article is therefore on the description of the design of the study and its theoretical framing.

In Baden-Wuerttemberg there is a compulsory written final examination in vocational schools (Berufsschulen) which also applies to the school subject German. This exam, which is introduced here, uses closed tasks along with open tasks. In this context the general question will be discussed what a skills-oriented exam can look like and what types of tasks are most appropriate to the subject and the type of school. In order to probe the potential of closed tasks, these will be compared to the traditional methods of assessment in the school subject German, especially to essay writing. Examples regarding different skills will be used to show the capabilities and the shortcomings of different types of tasks.
