This article aims to introduce changes in language and intercultural education in the German federal state of Lower Saxony. It presents a short theoretical introduction and two empirical studies with kindergarteners and experts in professional and university education. Our analysis shows an imperative to emphasise multilingual and intercultural education, especially because of the big proportion of migrants in Germany. This implication is drawn due to new regulations changing education policies since 2015.

More than ever, demands on register sensitive language skills play a significant role in vocational training. An analysis of curricula shows that especially written communication situations (with focus on distance) are dominating. Therefore process-oriented writing didactics shall serve as a basis for a didactics concept which includes several stages (sensitization, exercise, transfer). An instruction process design focusing on application illustrates exemplarily how these stages can be implemented and how register competence of native speakers as well as of students with a migration background can be developed.

The article deals with the enhancement of job-related conversational competence through the use of interactive communication systems in digitally supported teaching of German as a foreign or second language. It focuses on whether and how far learning platforms can contribute to the development of work-related conversational competence if they are equipped with interactive communication systems (chatbots or voicebots) that simulate face-to-face interaction. The first part is devoted to terminological clarification; based on this, the second part discusses how interactive communication systems (talking chatbots) can be set up for vocational DaF/DaZ instruction. Finally, a method is proposed to develop effective task formats for LCMS courses.

This article investigates forms of language learning in the German system of vocational training. We examine the models of language learning as well as possible target groups that are relevant in this specific setting, and develop a system for categorizing various measures of language learning in the context of vocational training. We subsequently describe several practical examples of language learning measures in the vocational schools, the apprenticing companies and third party training programs, and classify them within our system of language learning models. At the end, we take an expanded look at the mentoring project „WEICHENSTELLUNG fur Ausbildung und Beruf “ as an example of a University-based language learning approach within the larger field of vocational training.

In 2010, the leo.-Level-One study on functional illiteracy attracted a lot of attention. The study revealed the immense extent of inadequate literacy among adults and diagnosed functional illiteracy in around 7.5 million people of working age in Germany. This article provides an overview of the research on low literacy among adults and presents the vocational training system as a place of promotion and literacy. For this purpose, functional illiteracy with its signs, causes and manifestations on the one hand, and aspects of promotion of literacy in vocational training on the other hand, will be examined. Furthermore, selected projects and methods for dealing with low literacy are presented and assessed.
