In order to gain insights into sensitivity to register, a study was conducted in which students in vocational training were assigned a special editorial task requiring them to revise a fictitious friend’s job application. The letter was filled with various colloquial expressions. The results showed that all participants suggested modifications, revealing a certain sensitivity to register. On the other hand, the relatively high number of unsuccessful correction attempts by students indicated that they frequently lacked the linguistic resources to adapt the register appropriately.

Communicative skills play a crucial part in the successful completion of vocational training. This includes not only technical language and everyday communication, but also job-related language as a key-competencies. The goal of this research project is to define the register of job-related language, to establish a distinction to other related registers and to develop recommendations for teachers. Apart from that, the project explores which requirements need to be met to successfully master the register of job-related language, especially for non-native speakers.

„Ein Tag Deutsch - in der Pflege“ (One day of German - for nurses) is a digital education tool for GSL (German as Second Language) learners with basic nursing skills who wish to reach level B2 as part of an adaptation qualification. Central components of the playful training are audio-supported scenarios of everyday nursing activities which enable the user(s) to experience and try out authentic communication situations by interlinking content-specific and language learning. This is coupled with in-depth and advanced language exercises, a dictionary and a knowledge database for cultural background information.

The degree program (second subject) „Berufssprache Deutsch“, kicked off in winter 2015/16 at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universitat Erlangen-Nurnberg, addresses prospective vocational school teachers. While the aim of the degree program is to prepare the graduates for all upcoming tasks concerning teaching German, a special focus lies on classes in vocational preparation, in dual and full time vocational training. This paper focuses on the concept and aim of the degree program. Finally, the innovative concept for German language teachers in vocational schools will be discussed.

The aim of international pull-out classes in vocational colleges is to enable newly arrived immigrants to acquire knowledge in a specific professional field. Furthermore, the aim is to improve the general education and, above all, to foster the pupils’ knowledge of German. As a result, professional orientation must be integrated into German lessons and – as the pupils have little knowledge of German – language skills should be supported across the curriculum. The question arises which learning objectives, contents and methods for profession-oriented language teaching can be identified and implemented right from the start of a course.
