The paper deals with phenomenological foundations of multiculturalism on the basis of the categories of following concepts: multi-layer being, concretization, intentionality, life world, epoché. Structural and functional methods are used for the analysis. As a result, a more subtle theory of multiculturalism is formulated beyond the “melting pot” and “cultural salad”

The paper presents an overview of how crosscultural communication was carried out during the LendLease supplies via the Arctic convoys. Special attention is paid to multilingualism in wartime Arkhangelsk. The paper considers the importance of non-professional translation and cross-cultural mediation during the Arctic convoys.
