The article investigates the concept of authenticity in the context of foreign language learning, and dwells on the significance of audiovisual sources for mastering the multicultural environment by an individual. The authors focus on authenticity as a psychological phenomenon and present an empirical study of the relationship between authentic perception of language and psychological constitution of personality. Psychodiagnostic techniques related to self-actualization, ability to adapt in new living conditions were used with students of Glazov Teachers’ Training Institute. The results of the empirical investigation show that the students who were taught using mostly authentic texts exhibited a higher foreign language skill level, greater psychological stability in communication, and they were able to use a greater range of non-verbal communication means.

Ecotourism is growing particularly popular today. Russian culture has always attracted foreigners. Knowledge of foreign languages facilitates crosscultural communication. In order to enhance international connections, local communities need to acquire socio-linguistic competences. The aim of this research is to conceptualize an educational module enabling learners to master their intercultural communication skills. The result of the research is the description of an English course designed for people from local communities who wish to acquire, refresh or hone their language skills in English in order to enhance ecotourism and communicate with tourists effectively.

The focus of the article is on the value of multilingualism and the importance of creating a multilingual learning environment at the level of tertiary education. The author outlines a number of opportunities that exist for universities, which are sensitive to multilingual approaches, in the design of degree programmes. The case of Higher School of Economics in Saint Petersburg where 30 % of degree programmes are English-taught and the number of international faculty and students is constantly increasing, is used to illustrate the models of multilingual degree programmes.

In modern methods of teaching foreign languages, there is a special interest in the study and implementation of a cognitive approach to teaching. One of the significant characteristics of the cognitive process of an individual is the cognitive style. The study of cognitive styles of bilinguals can become a source of valuable information both for the theory of bilingualism and for the methods of teaching the second language. Cognitive style becomes the basis for a certain cognitive strategy. The paper deals with the range of problems arising in the study of cognitive styles and strategies of bilingual children, and identifies possible solutions. The main problems include the complexity of the definition of“cognitive style” according to its multicomponent nature; the need to take into account the peculiarities of bilinguals’cognitive styles when considering both speech perception and performance; undeveloped linguistic classifications of cognitive styles; the lack of generally accepted methods for the cognitive styles study on linguistic material, as well as for ethnocultural features of cognitive styles. Based on the analysis of some existing classifications of cognitive strategies it is concluded that the hierarchy of cognitive strategies of foreign pupils studying Russian is different from the hierarchy of cognitive strategies of Russian-speaking students, learning the Russian language asthe science

During the past two and a half centuries the traditions and culture of the native people of Alaska have been affected first by the Russian and then by the Anglo-American culture. The traces of the Russian influence can be observed even 150 years after the cession of this territory to the US, as verified by the expeditions of Russian America Heritage Project documenting sustained the Russian influence, the religious one in the first place. At the initial stage of exploration of Russian America, influence was predominantly exercised through taking amanats (hostages) resulting in close contacts between the Russian fur hunters and the representatives of native population. In contrast to Siberia, where this practice originated from, Alaskan amanats were treated quite kindly and passed the Russian customs and traditions to their kin. After Russian American Company was established, the Russian Orthodox Church took over as the primary bearer of the Russian cultural traditions with the men of faith acting as advocates of the native population in the colonial administration among other things. The Russian Orthodox Church retained its authority and the primary role of the mediator between the civilizations even after the cession of Alaska.

The paper focuses on the notion of multilingual awareness in relation to the introduction of a second foreign language in schools’ curricula in Russia. It first considers whether the expansion in this field matters and what are the reasons for such a move in language planning. It then examines the attitudes of both in-service teachers and students in teaching education programs of Bachelor and Master degree levels towards multilingualism and linguistic diversity. Most specifically, it looks into the level of teachers’ and students’ awareness of a multilingual component in language teaching and points to difficulties in maintaining a healthful balance between English and other foreign languages. Finally, it provides implications for the changes in teacher education to prepare a better qualified specialist capable of meeting the challenges of multilingual and multicultural

The article focuses on the narrative structure of K. Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day. The phenomenon of Englishness as an ambivalent category is described through the peculiarities of the narrative structure of the literary text. The linguistic study of chronotope in the text under analysis makes it possible to prove the impossibility of positive evaluation of the nostalgic cultural stereotypes associated with the idea of Englishness in the narrative. The ambivalent character of Englishness as an example of national identity crisis is revealed in the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, a British Booker prize-winner of Japanese origin.
