Journalism teaching hospitals have long been a steady source of news in the communities they call home. As these programs have a track record of increasing essential public knowledge and adding vitality to journalism programs, this study mines the knowledge of current and former journalism teaching hospital leaders to ascertain the necessary elements for starting what will be a sustainable program. Critical elements found included a passionate founder, a local coverage gap the program can fill, and support from academic leadership.

An analysis of 640 posts from the social media platforms of 14 students at a historically Black university revealed that entertainment accounted for 68% of their social media content, “uplift” 17%, and empowerment 14%. Educators worry that students may be squandering online resources that could help improve their lives when they choose entertainment over uplift and empowerment. The study examines why entertainment trumps uplift and empowerment, and more broadly, how it may serve as a catalyst to combat disinformation.

This study examines the effectiveness of a race and reporting course–based student journalism project, a partnership between a university and a national media outlet, which aimed to center the concerns of young voters during the 2020 presidential election and expand training of student journalists. This qualitative study explains how student journalists’ training in intersectional reporting helped them to produce complex stories about diverse young voters’ presidential election concerns during one of the most unique presidential elections in American history—one held during a global health pandemic and on the heels of a racial justice uprising.

The book encourages students to seek work in nonprofit newsrooms. It remains to be seen if this relatively short-term trend offers sustainable growth. U.S. journalism and media communication schools, meanwhile, continue to struggle with declining enrollment given the lack of competitive pay and employment opportunities. In this way, Baleria offers a response to the fundamental need to rethink how we teach journalism. At the same time, new books will better address generate artificial intelligence and the potential to contribute to elevating careers or further damage the journalism landscape.

Scholarly calls surrounding the need to prepare journalism students for hostile encounters and harassment are emerging. Using in-depth interviews with 28 early-career journalists from across the United States, this project underscores a need for content related to hostility within journalism courses. Findings also highlighted a tension between early-career journalists’ beliefs about how journalists are supposed to act and how they coped with hostility in practice. This created hesitancy to speak up and have discussions about hostility with editors, especially among women journalists. Therefore, I argue for a shift in how we talk about hostility toward journalists in our classrooms.

will find examples of public relations highlighted in earlier chapters. Chapter 1, for instance, uses graphics and case studies to demonstrate how public relations professionals can use the dramatic story arc to share information. In later chapters, students learn how public relations can be applied to the media mix when planning an integrated marketing campaign strategy. This helpful pattern is found throughout the book, solidifying the information in the minds of students. Brand Storytelling is a versatile textbook that can easily be used in foundational courses to graduate level. The bold keywords and phrases that are clearly defined, plus the careful use of headings and subheadings, contribute to the foundational courses. Students will walk away with the ability to utilize their storytelling skills in future advertising, marketing, or public relations courses. The final chapters, in which storytelling is put to use in an integrated marketing campaign, could challenge upper-level or graduate students as they apply their skills. The chapter case studies could also be explored in greater detail in upper-level classrooms and assignments. Visually, the textbook does not distract students with bright illustrations or an overabundance of graphics. It is more common to see a table in which a story structure is applied to an advertisement or one of the aforementioned templates. Chapters conclude with relevant case studies, questions for consideration, and exercises. As noted earlier, the ancillary materials are not yet available on the publisher’s website (rowman.com); however, if they are as helpful as the textbook, they will be a welcome addition to any teaching toolkit.

Suicide is an important issue facing students on college campuses. Student journalists face unique challenges covering suicide, including ethical considerations related to headline wording, text descriptions, and sourcing. Health advocates, news outlets, and professional journalism organizations partnered to develop guidelines for responsible suicide reporting. This study sought to understand the extent to which student journalists complied with the recommendations, which were designed to prevent so-called “copycat” deaths. Using content analysis, the study examined how 51 student newspapers covered suicide more than 3 years (2019–2021). It offers recommendations for students and advisors.
