The authors assess the impact that sophisticated software and hardware tools have on the work of technical writers, and they explore the need for tools that fully utilize the functionality that advanced technology systems can provide. Three development trends in advanced technology environments are discussed: formal software engineering methods, complex applications, and new products. Finally, the need for standardization is addressed.<>

The notion of document accuracy and its relationship to usability are reconsidered. Attention is given to accuracy and the review process and to the problems with expert reviews. Ways to ensure that a document is accurate and complete are discussed, with emphasis on the need to rethink the concepts of both accuracy and usability testing.<>

The author analyzes the nature of social support systems, the effects of social support systems in reducing burnout, and methods of facilitating a burnout's interactions with his/her social support systems. It is concluded that it may be difficult to form an effective social support system. Lack of trust and interpersonal and intergroup conflicts may inhibit open and constructive communication. Furthermore, inappropriate social interaction can be harmful. However, the overall conclusion is that the support group can be a powerful method for alleviating burnout.<>

A progress report on a study of what makes a person an effective communicator in the technical and scientific fields is presented. The study is based on responses to a questionnaire and many in-depth interviews. It deals with individuals who have to deliver complex technical information to nontechnical audiences or to other disciplines within an organization. The author gives a sampling of replies to a question about the ideal image of a communicator in the technical/scientific fields and describes four distinguishing behavioral traits.<>

At Fisher Controls International a detailed model of the technical documentation process was initially developed as an aid in preparation of a request for corporate capital funds to purchase equipment, software, and training for a higher level of documentation automation. A corporate accounting specialist then assisted in preparation of the specific internal paperwork used to justify capital expenditures. The process model has since been used to show the actual impact of the implemented improvements. The current model is now being used as part of a research project to identify the next incremental step in an ongoing automation process. It is concluded that developing a detailed model of the technical documentation process is an important first step in justifying the cost of increasing electronic automation of the process.<>

The VM/XA SP Conversion Notebook was created to minimize the effect of this conversion, and the customers were questioned directly to understand what type of information was needed. Descriptions are given of the philosophy and approach, the requirements gathering sessions, draft evaluation, and follow-on activities.<>

A more complete involvement of the technical editor in the development process for a computer product is proposed in connection with the concept of layers of editing, i.e. literary, semantic, perennial, and integrated. It is noted that a technical editor whose skills include the integrated layer can review the entire information interface-the key tops, the panels, the manuals, and the marketing materials. In addition it is noted that integrating the editor into the entire development process requires coordination. The editor should coordinate review activities with other groups in order to promote efficiency and to ensure usability beyond the scope of editorial review.<>

Information processing theory is applied to documents to analyze the visual processing of the page. Research on readers' perceptions of graphic characteristics and spatial organization is examined. A method is presented that increases the efficiency of developing and using a document by applying information processing principles and research on perception. It is concluded that, by applying principles of information theory, the semiology of graphic characteristics, and reader's spatial perception of the page, the desktop publisher can develop visually efficient documents, improving not only the reader's comprehension of the document but also the document development process.<>

The author discusses how a pragmatic approach for analyzing legal and quasi-legal documents can help one understand the purpose of such documents and why they are so difficult to write. She explores the purpose of legal language in consumer contracts using a pragmatic approach exemplified by J.L. Austin's (1962) theory of performative statements. It is concluded that the difficulties are compounded when the documents are aimed at audiences who lack legal training. Analyzing documents in a pragmatic fashion can help a writer to discern the difference between language that informs and language that creates. This understanding can in turn help one determine the possible tradeoffs involved when one tries to write documents that contain legal language.<>
