This study seeks suggestions from primary and secondary school teachers on how to improve their relationship with research in their field. We developed focus groups with teachers with similar characteristics: level (primary or secondary) and experience with educational research. The teachers focused their suggestions on four elements: the need for researchers to publish studies relevant to teachers, the role of education administrations in the dissemination of research findings, the changes in teacher training programs within universities, and the critical analysis of teachers’ attitudes towards educational research.

The article presents the results of a study of the Ph.D. training process, with particular emphasis on the differences and similarities among academic disciplines and fields, which in turn determine disciplinary and discursive identities. We argue that reading identity intersects with disciplinary identity, suggesting the significance of the context in which these processes are developed and take place. Being a scientist means belonging to a social and institutional elite, whose members are expected to acquire specific practices, rituals, values and communication techniques. The study concludes that the curricula of Ph.D. programs lacks space for the effective teaching of scientific communication.

The study explores the academic profession by analyzing the experiences of part-time faculty in three public universities in Mexico. We used 56 semi-structured interviews to understand the perspectives of part-time faculty toward their forms of participation in the workplace. This study derives from a larger project aimed at understanding the context, activities and interactions in which faculty engage as part of their profession. We found three profiles that characterize part-time faculty's participation at the university. The definition of the profiles is based on the relationships among: 1) their occupational status; 2) the activities faculty perform at the university; and 3) their professional aspirations and plans within the university.

This paper analyzes the perception of the quality of higher education in the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León and the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, the top-ranked universities in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon. We conducted a structural survey inside and outside the premises of the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey and Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. We then applied a structural equation model to the results of the survey, in order to gauge studentś perceptions of the quality of the various offerings of these institutions. Among key results, we found that students from Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey give greater weight to the modern facilities and technological innovation in the classroom, while students from Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León place greater value on the level of academic preparation of faculty.

This article analyzes the origins of a physiology research group at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (buap), tracking their academic careers in order to understand the cultural, normative and cognitive elements that shaped an institutional research model established in the mid-1970s. This research contributes to the study of scientific organizations in Mexico, through the reconstruction of researchers’ careers. It adopts an institutional analysis approach focused on the academic level of the subjects and their disciplinary group. This approach reveals the role of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (unam) in forming an elite group of young researchers alongside experienced researchers, who have served as the pillars of the disciplinary group since its inception.
