Traditionally, the relational algebra uses four groups of operations as follows: the set operations, the selection and projection, the different kinds of the joins, and the rename. There are several operational identities which are very useable in the query optimization processes of database systems. The experience of practical usage of databases has showed that the expansion of the classical relational algebra is required. The new operations are: sorting, grouping, aggregations, extension of the projection, and extension of the join. Several operational identities have been introduced in the expanded relational algebra. Based on this knowledge we are able to growing the effectiveness of the database systems. This is a remarkable retroactivity from the practice to the development of the theory. The paper is devoted to demonstrate the development of the relational algebra springing from the practice.

The use of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) in general purpose computing has been shown to incur significant performance benefits, for applications ranging from scientific computing to database sorting and search. In this paper we try to evaluate the execution of integer arithmetic operation on CPU and GPU processors. We evaluate the execution from both performance and power consumption perspectives.

Autonomous navigation is an important problem in mobile robotics. Various solutions have been proposed part of them being sensor based. The use of the sensors offers flexibility and adaptability to the robot but has also disadvantages: it may need powerful processing units, mounted on the robot and it is difficult to represent correctly and in all details the environment and the position of the robot due to errors in the data collected by the sensors. This paper presents a wireless sensory control for mobile robot navigation. The Cricket family of sensors and the X80 wheeled robot from DrRobot were used. The processing needs for computing the robot's trajectory were moved at the PC level. A sensor controls the navigation of the robot. It is wirelessly connected to a similar sensor attached to a PC. The PC commands the robot, being informed about its position and motion by other wireless sensors. The software was developed at sensors, robot and PC levels.

Ontologies play a pivotal role in the Semantic Web by providing metadata for distributed and automated information processing. The standard ontology language OWL does not apply Unique Name Assumption. This lack leads to misunderstandings among users and complicates databases and software modeling. The paper presents ways to overcome it without increasing both computational and conceptual complexities of the standard formats. Weaker forms of name assumptions are also proposed which are more appropriate for the Semantic Web.

This article presents a solution for distant monitoring and control of the greenhouse system via internet. It has a web based user interface with possibility of managing the sensors and actuators. Also allows to log events on the system like humidity, temperature, light etc. This Web based distant monitoring system uses a high end PIC microcontroller based developer board with Ethernet adapter that will allow you to monitor and control the laboratory from any Internet connection. This solution offers a live video stream from the greenhouse's camera and allows monitoring the growth of the plants. With the usage of Sun SPOT based wireless sensor network is realized the environment monitoring. The described system is highly customizable and easily adaptable to particular deployment requirements.

One of the results of the network planning is a diagram that has identified critical path whose duration is equal to the project duration. For the purpose of the research in this paper, network diagram is observed with critical and subcritical paths and the influence of subcritical path on project duration is taken into the consideration. Superposition has been applied in order to define project duration, i.e. getting resulting — superponed path. Used methods are: analytical method — based on Clark's equations and numerical method – Monte Carlo simulation. Analytical method was basis for developing the project duration assessment model, which main characteristics are also presented in this paper.

In this paper we present a new, fast and robust method, which is suitable for detecting human faces in real time. In order to speed up processing, the application must have some prior knowledge about the scene, so it only investigates the area in which movement is detected. The implemented method uses a histogram based algorithm to find the possible face areas. After finding the areas, a skin color segmentation and a face feature extraction method is applied to rank the decisions. Depending on the given rank, the system can decide which candidate can take place in further processing, for example in face recognition. This solution provides efficient human face recognition even in a fast changing scene.

This paper presents a system for learning style based personalization of e-learning courses. The courses are created according to SCORM standard. Student learning style is defined using Felder-Silverman model. For each learning style specific adaptation actions are presented. The paper analyzes different meta-data sets for describing learning content. Presented system is added as an extension to an e-learning system Sakai.

Nowadays many companies must adapt their business processes to persistent changes forced by technology, organizational or political factors. Business processes are usually supported by specialized software products. These software products also must adapt to changed business environments. Software users must have effective way to specify new requests for software they use. In this paper is presented model of modified submission phase for software change request process. This model is implemented and verified in ScenarioBuilder, a software used for management of networking scenarios in virtual network laboratory VNLab. VNLab is used for teaching networking concepts at university course.

Molecular beam epitaxially grown fullerene layers are investigated with the help of image processing. The layered structures are studied in morphological respect. The individual layer morphologies are derived from the atomic force microscopy picture of the surface. The pattern morphology of the certain layers is analysed by box counting method. The surface morphology shows fractal behaviour. The pattern of each layer shows different dimension. The actual dimension depends on the actual distance of the layer from the substrate. The change of the dimension is attributed to the change of the binding behaviour. The topology of the surface is also studied using participation ratio and structural entropy calculations.
