(Inter)cultural awareness is a widely discussed concept in foreign language education, being considered one of the main pillars on which the process of language learning isbased. Our paper’s aim is to analyze the way in which (inter)cultural awareness isconstructed in the main Japanese language textbooks used worldwide after the 1980s. Wefocus on the self-introduction sections in A1-level textbooks, identifying the main“foreigner” characters and examining their linguistic and cultural behavior in theirinteractions with the Japanese ones, as this is the first encounter of non-Japanese learnerswith the (inter)cultural construct in Japanese language study materials. We demonstratethat, at this level, we can speak of an advanced cultural awareness, but not of a genuineintercultural one.

The article aims at investigating the phenomenon of intermediality in 2005 novel Never LetMe Go by the British writer Kazuo Ishiguro, whose Japanese origin adds to the inherentlylaconic, Eastern aesthetics of his writing. Of particular importance is the notion of “literarycinematographicness”, defined as the use of cinematic techniques (or filmic modes) innarrative fiction, thus producing the effect of multimodality. Analyzing Ishiguro’s novel, thearticle focuses on such elements of literary cinematographicness as the prevalent audiovisuality, the use of audio-visual special effects, different shots sizes and shifts in perspective, montage, frame shots, flashbacks, and flexible chronotope.

This article proposes a discussion of autoethnography as an instrument of decolonizing theacademe and creating spaces for the voices of the under-represented and their livedexperiences, often queer and/or non-white. This discussion is inspired by Octavia E. Butler’sspeculative fiction and is part of a larger doctoral project exploring the intersections of race, gender, sexuality and religion in her earlier, more classic, science fiction and her later, previsionary, speculative fiction. The objective is to lay out a theoretical foundation to thecontention that Butler’s fiction is equivalent to self-mapping - and thus autoethnographic -,and that it engages the minority woman and queer reader in a similarly autoethnographicjourney. The present article is a theoretic preamble to this contention. An extended versionof this article is aimed to be included in my doctoral thesis, where these theories ofautoethnography will be tested on Butler’s Bloodchild, Parable of the Sower, and Fledgling.

The competitive financing of research and the increased competition caused researchpractice to focus on citation indices and the scientific community on rankings, the demandfor an improved response from research and for more visibility are developments that haveoften been criticized by the public. The change in the scientific landscape and the culture ofquantification due to the competition for funds, grants and positions, the establishment ofreputation through long lists of publications and third-party funding, decisive criteria forprofessions and recruitment, reveal grievances in the scientific community. The articletherefore shows the consequences of these developments and names some challenges that thehumanities, and in particular the philological disciplines, encounter in meeting scientificstandards.

This paper presents some arguments based on research into multimedia opportunities inforeign language learning. It provides critical comments on different and sometimescontroversial views of learners and teachers on how new media have been promoted inlanguage teaching. The new media comprise combination of texts, sounds, computer-basedexercises - like cloze passages exercises, jumble sentences rearrangements, or textreconstruction dialogues - and grammar tables and structures with supporting softwaretools enclosed in spelling programs, audio dictionaries and search engines, allowing theuser to browse the entire range for specific topics of activities. All these are significantlybeneficial to the language learning process. Notwithstanding all these benefits, it isdoubtful whether these new computer-based methods live up to the claim to surpass theeffectiveness of existing, traditional methods in language teaching and learning. Most ofthe traditional exercises, as well as those based on PC applications, largely rely on asubstantial amount of authentic language contained in most of the reference works. All inall, we can say that

This article discusses the fictional transpositions of a traumatic event in recent Romanianhistory in some contemporary novels by women writers. Decree 770/1966 meant the brutalintervention of the paternalistic state in the private lives of its citizens and the redefinition ofgender roles to the effect of translating reproductive roles into productive ones. The themeof abortion is analysed from the theoretical perspective of new historicism and culturalmaterialism and through a feminine and feminist lens in a number of works published byRomanian contemporary women authors in the past few years.

In this article, we have chosen to study the issue of the resumption of the discourse of otherswithin the master dissertations. We will examine the practice of reformulating the discourseof others implemented by students in the development of the literature review in their master'sdissertation. In particular, we will look at the reconciliation between citation and thedifferent types of reformulation identified in the corpus. For operational reasons, we willleave aside the analysis of the citations themselves by focusing on the analysis of thereformulations produced by the students and how these represent a continuation of thecitation at the enunciative level by the proximity face to the speech of others.

Publishing procedures in all scientific areas have been in constant flux to ensure articles’formal unity and most importantly significant contribution to respective research fields.Scientists but more specifically higher education professionals across the globe have joineda race for “points” to warrant their standing in academic communities or to comply withpromotion or tenure requirements. Publishing scientific/ academic work in high-rankingjournals is today the norm in most universities worldwide which has imposed on editorialteams methods of selection relying almost exclusively on the authority of reviewers. This article will present a brief overview of recent concerns regarding the peer reviewpractice in different publishing fields and the issue of less than collegial behaviours thathave also emerged. The paper examines the importance of unbiased feedback of specialistswhich ensures the quality of published materials and highlights authors’ apprehensionabout bullying in peer review processes. The present critique will also mention the need forgolden rules of conduct for peer reviewers and the necessity of editorial boards tosupervise and address inappropriate aggressive comments from reviewers.

This empirical essay shows how to bring, as a teacher, authentic and linguistically difficulttexts closer to learners through playful forms of work. By presenting tested forms of workthat have evolved over time through their use in classrooms, this article shows how cognitivelearning, practical and creative activity as well as social and personal learning can beinterconnected.
