Noise caused by industrial activities, urban life and traffic has a negative impact on people's health and quality of life. Environmental noise mapping is an important tool to study and address this problem. Through specialized measurement and analysis techniques, it is possible to identify areas at high risk of noise and under-stand the extent of the problem. This information can be used to develop strategies to protect the population exposed to high noise levels. In this paper, a method for collecting, processing, managing and mapping spatial noise data based on Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) and web mapping technologies is present-ed. The proposed method uses noise pollution data collected from citizens using mobile devices. This includes both on-site measurements and information on users' subjective perceptions, providing a comprehensive picture of the problem. This enables authorities to take into account the individual perceptions and needs of citizens when planning noise mitigation measures, which has not been the case in the inter-national literature to date. To achieve this goal, a prototype of a free and open-source tool called "Noise Pollution" was developed. The proposed methodology and the resulting system are intended to help improve the quality of life in noisy environments and protect the health of citizens. They provide a practical tool for collecting and analyzing noise data and enable the development of noise mitigation strategies for the benefit of the population exposed to high noise levels.

Gamification awakens interest and motivation for teaching Geography. The objective of this study is to analyse the use, appropriateness and proposals according to university students in Spain. Methodologically, we surveyed 125 students (Geography, History, Humanities) in the subject “Geography of the world regions” (2022-2023). The results indicate that both the knowledge of the meaning of gamification and of the learning resources is low. Respondents report a limited use of gamification (56.8% in schools and 55.8% in universities). With respect to the appropriateness of gamification, the opinions are notably positive (for example, serves as an ideal tool to assist students in mastering course materials). However, regarding the student proposals, the half of the participants (52.0%) do not mention any proposals which may limits the application of this innovative technology in the instruction of university level Geography courses.

The ever-increasing mobility of modern society has a number of negative effects on space, the environment, health and quality of life. It is therefore crucial to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable mobility, part of which is effective and comprehensive education of children. The article presents some key findings of the Sustainable Mobility in Preschools and Primary Schools project, carried out in the period 2019–2021. We investigated whether gamified activities can change students' travel habits and whether the change in travel habits is influenced by their age. The study is based on the survey data from 28,043 primary school students (grades 1–9) across 220 schools (77.7% in rural, 22.3% in urban settlements). Employing paired-samples t-tests and one-way analysis of variance, the study evaluated the impact of gamified activities on travel habits. The results show that children can significantly change their traveling habits with the help of gamification. Although the greatest change in travel habits occurred during the implementation of the activity, the results suggest that more lasting effects can also be achieved. Furthermore, younger participants displayed greater responsiveness to the gamified interventions compared to their older counterparts. This research enhances the corpus of knowledge pertaining to educational strategies for sustainable mobility by providing insights from one of the largest projects to investigate the influence of gamified activities on children's commuting habits.

This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to examine the temporal evolution of publications on the relationship between education and tourism, as well as to identify the main authors, institutions and countries that have led research in this field. Through a meticulous examination of 968 articles retrieved from the Web of Science database between 1950 and 2021, a detailed picture of the development of research in this area has been revealed. The findings provide valuable information on the temporal and geographical distribution of publications, as well as on the key actors in the field of research on the relationship between education and tourism. Since 2007, a significant increase in the number of publications on the relationship between education and tourism has been observed. This increase suggests a growing interest and attention in this field of study over time. This finding may indicate changes in research trends and continued advances in the understanding of how education and tourism interact with each other.

In recent years, Athens has been at the center of the so-called “migration crisis”, as thousands of newcomers have found temporary or permanent refuge in the city. However, because the state’s housing policies have reduced the available positions of those who have the right to settle in state accommodation structures, an ever-increasing number of newcomers facing homelessness and live in city’s streets, parks and squares. In this context, a solidarity collective kitchen named “Our House” was self-organized by a group of newcomers on the city’s central square, Omonoia Square, where it remained for two years. Our House project activities, based on mutual help and commoning practices, claimed the homeless migrants’ right to the center of the city. However, in 2019 the square was turned into a construction site and Our House activities were prohibited. This paper is based on ethnographic urban research and discusses the solidarity practices of homeless migrants through the theoretical approaches of the right to the city, as well as critical approaches to homelessness and urban commons. The main findings of the paper focus on highlighting the homeless migrants’ commoning practices, and the paper’s contribution lies in the enrichment of theoretical discussions on the right to the city and urban commoning practices through the case homeless migrants’s self-organization.

In the realm of new economic geography studies, an ongoing debate centers around the role of transportation costs in redirecting economic activity away from peripheral areas towards urban spaces. This theory gains support from the phenomenon of rural depopulation in developed countries, as it is generally accompanied by improvements in accessibility due to new infrastructure and technology. This study introduces a methodology for analyzing the relationship between accessibility and regional inequality while accounting for rural depopulation. Moreover, it acknowledges the significance of the measurement timeframe, as the dynamics between accessibility components are not always synchronous. The developed methodology is employed for investigation within the geographical region of main-land Greece. The findings reveal that relative accessibility, in contrast to absolute accessibility, exhibits a correlation with rural depopulation in mainland Greece. Finally, the study examines the Modified Areal Unit Problem (MAUP) to address inconsistencies observed in similar spatial studies. The disparities in results among the various geographical administrative levels carry substantial implications for policymakers dealing with issues of urbanization and uneven regional development.

Information regarding direct investment flows across European space is scarce, and in most of the cases at the national level. Such a scarcity limits the capacity to undertake the required analyses and to derive the corresponding conclusions on the interrelations among European regions. This is especially so considering that Europe is gradually moving from a “space of States” to a “State of spaces” and from a “space of places’’ to a “space of flows’’. In a nutshell, the pure essence of the European economic integration process is the gradual “thinning” and “melting” of (the artificial) border impediments. Thus, as the process of European economic integration is in full swing, European territories have been experiencing a period of unprecedented change, being transformed into integral parts of the European economic space. The paper uncovers regional typologies in Europe in terms of interregional and intraregional (NUTS 2 level) direct investment flows in year 2018, the year prior to the eruption of the COVID19 pandemic. To this end, the paper compiles an O-D matrix for interregional and intraregional direct investment flows in Europe, constructs tailor-made clustering indicators and employs the k-means clustering technique.

Sidewalks are a relevant part of the living space in urban environments but are still rarely mapped. In recent years, the mapping of sidewalks has grown in importance among the OSM and academic communities as a matter of concern for many UN SDGs. To cover this gap, we propose a GitHub-hosted, fully open-source QGIS Plugin entitled "OSM SidewalKreator" to automatically draw the geometries of sidewalks for OSM crossings and curb crossing interfaces. The plugin workflow encompasses the steps of input area selection; data fetching, data cleaning, sidewalk geometries generation; crossings and kerbs generation; optional sidewalk splitting; and data exporting. Furthermore, the tool gives the user the capacity to have control over the process. Our tests revealed that the proposed method embodied by the plugin surpasses the manual process in many contexts, highlighting completeness, topological and thematic accuracies. We conclude that deepening, improving, and increasing the amount of open sidewalk mapping, mainly in the widely available OSM, can be a valuable asset to improve the development of accessibility and mobility worldwide.

The Role of the Territory in an Educating City: Two Italian Laboratory Examples of Participatory Urban Planning
Q1 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2023-11-08 DOI: 10.48088/ejg.s.mon.14.4.037.045
Stefania Montebelli
The aim of this article is to stimulate further reflection on the concept of the Educating City by presenting two Italian participatory planning initiatives. The analysis focuses on the benefits of knowledge of the surrounding territory for the development of an informed and engaged citizenry; the key role of the city for education and participatory space in a learning society; and finally, the strategies that have been implemented to educate the community about its territory and encourage active participation in its development. The focus of the reflection is thus the city as an 'open' educational environment, made up of spatial elements that are closely connected through social relations. In this environment, actors influence each other and engage in constructive communication and cooperation to co-create shared living spaces. In this sense, a comprehensive knowledge of the territory can contribute to the development of a cooperative citizenship whose actions influence both the communal living spaces and the social fabric that populates them. Through continuous learning about the territory, the urban community can acquire skills of conscious self-determination and participate effectively in the shaping of urban space. This is a fruitful process that cannot avoid taking into account the 'situated context' and the education that enables the integration needs of the urban community to be incorporated and expressed in the decision-making processes about the future development of its own territory.
