After identifying a communication problem in customer service at the Faro City Hall desk at the Citizen’s Advice Bureau in Faro (Portugal), this study proposes a methodology for the creation of an instrument that facilitates and improves customer service: the civil servant customer service handbook. To ensure the relevance of this handbook and to determine its contents and format, a prior study was conducted in the form of seven semi structured interviews. The content analysis of the seven interviews revealed that the creation of the handbook would be of fundamental importance in facilitating communication with the citizens, and enhancing the employees’ levels of satisfaction, well-being and motivation.

In the past few decades there has been an increase in the diversification of options for tourism, with the emergence of new segments, among them industrial tourism: the reclamation of industrial heritage sites as tourist attractions as well as visits to currently active factories. In 2013, the Portuguese Tourism Office (Turismo de Portugal) created a taskforce with the objective of establishing new quality standards for industrial tourism. These standards have had a positive impact in this segment and will certainly contribute to a considerable improvement in the quality of the available options. In this article, these standards are analysed and the challenges that they create are discussed, as well as how good practices can be assured in this field.

From 1964 to 1985, Brazil was ruled by a military dictatorship, marked by strong political/ideological repression. This research aimed to investigate if the tourist stereotypes were used as a way to promote the ideology proposed by the military at a greater control of the population. The following methodological procedures were adopted: bibliographic review and documentary survey. Brazil: land of sun and sea, beautiful women, happy and hospitable people! This was the Brazil which was repeatedly presented in the everyday discourses during the analyzed period. In this research, still in progress, the history will be reviewed and reexamined. It is believed that the novelty and the historical importance of the theme justify the relevance of the work.

With the emergence of modernity in the Western world, tourism became undeniably important, immediately becoming an object of political attention. Portugal shared this phenomenon, through the development of domestic tourism travel thanks largely to the expansion of the national railway grid, which increased the number of potential domestic tourists, especially in the 1930s. This paper, of a theoretical and historical nature, will focus on two initiatives from the 1930s aimed at promoting railway tourism travel – mystery trains and popular trains – using a case study methodology. By analyzing the origins, formats and intentions of these initiatives, it is argued that the examples under study are components of a policy that seeks an identification of the population with the political and ideological projects of the First Republic and the Estado Novo.

El turismo convencional experimenta importantes transformaciones, derivadas de sus repercusiones economicas, sociales y ambientales, lo que ha motivado que algunos nichos de mercado se orienten hacia el consumo de productos diferenciados. Una de las estrategias de diferenciacion es la especializacion territorial para generar ventajas comparativas (Aguilar & Moreno, 2013). Dentro de las formas de especializacion territorial, se encuentran aquellas vinculadas con la produccion de alimentos emblematicos, siendo el turismo culinario una de las modalidades mejor acogidas por los turistas. El desarrollo de este tipo de turismo ha favorecido especialmente al espacio rural, donde la insercion de nuevas actividades supone una herramienta para la generacion de ingresos complementarios a las actividades tradicionales (UNWTO, 2012).

Twenty years ago, we were the first Portuguese hands-on team abroad to carry out a Tourism planning project, and in two decades the Dominican Republic has transformed itself tourism-wise and has been a preferred destination of the Portuguese ever since. It can be seen that tourism planning has a very close relationship with history and culture; furthermore, history is essential so that in the present, pathways for the future in global tourism may be drawn and in particular in the Ibero-American area, in the light of the network of possible exchanges, circuits and routes between both sides of the Atlantic, in current and future times.

Migrations from the Italian peninsula to the south of Brazil date from second half of nineteenth century. Adaptations to the new territory marked culinary practices of these groups. This article presents current situation of communities which originated in immigration, in terms of their food practices associated with local feasts, and, consequently, with tourism. The methodological procedure took up previous research in the same location, using its primary data. Afterwards, we conducted semi-structured interviews with women who currently live in the same community. Compared results show changes associated with origin of ingredients, use of new technologies and introduction of industrial products, as well as a new organization in menus. Everyday dishes have become part of the so-called feast food and are presented to tourists as marks of local community identity.
