Scholar poetry and the case of the epigram in particular has been a literary expression means not only of ideas and life attitudes but also of religious sentiment and profound religious faith. Delving into the epigrams of the second category and in particular, the epigrams dealing with the Cross and the Crucifixion, our attention will be focused on the tropes employed in these epigrams. In short, we will examine those tropes used by byzantine epigram-writers – anonymous or not – through a range of epigrams such as direct and indirect questions, exclamations and rhetoric questions as well as the influencing factors, the aims and objectives and finally, whether the use of these tropes is successful or not.

Hellenistic monumental sanctuaries in late Republican Latium : the advantages of a semantic approach

This article explores the advantages that a semantic system could provide to the group of Hellenistic monumental sanctuaries in Latium. Initially conceived as expressions of local reactions against Rome or as local adoptions of Roman socio-cultural practices, a semantic model allows us to see (architectural) style as a communication tool in different contexts. In this setting, there is a shift from Hellenisation, as an acculturation pheomenon, to Hellenism, as a phenomenon of social expression. Thus, a semantic model also sheds light on modes of self-perception and how style was perceived by various audiences. In particular, Hellenistic sanctuaries should be examined from local, regional and pan-Mediterranean prespectives. The emphasis on contextual applications of the semantic model should also make us take into consideration diachronicity. Given that the phenomenon spanned two centuries (the second and first centuries BC), style and, its meaning and function(s) in society would have changed due to more intense building activity and the increased presence of Hellenistic architecture in Central Italy. This consideration further allows us to move away from a static acculturation approach and acquire a better understanding of cultural contact and ethnogenesis in both the ancient and contemporary worlds.

Decent indecency : the 'Roman' image of 'Greek' traditions in Petronius's Satyricon

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how The Pergamene Youth and The Widow of Ephesus episodes present a stereotypical negative view of ‚Greek tradition‘ in Roman culture. This analysis shall show how the narrators of these two Milesian tales entertain while the implicit author connects ethical categories and values to the different levels of the complex narrative structure. The question is not what are the Greeks like, but how the author sees the Greeks. The subject of the current study is thus not the Hellas that is open to historical research, but the ideal of Greek culture that was present in Roman minds.

The political and military aspects of accession of Constantine the Great

S. Doležal
The article argues that Constantine the Great, until he was recognized by Galerius, the senior Emperor of the Tetrarchy, was an usurper with no right to the imperial power, nothwithstanding his claim that his father, the Emperor Constantius I, conferred upon him the imperial title before he died. Tetrarchic principles, envisaged by Diocletian, were specifically put in place to supersede and override blood kinship. Constantine’s accession to power started as a military coup in which a military unit composed of barbarian soldiers seems to have played an important role.

Stock characters from Atellana in Plautus' Palliata – the connections between Dossennus-Manducus and the Plautine parasites reconsidered Plautus' Palliata中Atellana的砧木性状——重新考虑dosenus - manducus与Plautine寄生虫的关系

The article answers the question whether the characters from the pre-literary Atellan farce appear in the comedies of Plautus. The author reconsiders and follows Eckard Lefèvre’s suggestion that the names of Bucco and Maccus mentioned by Plautus refer to the stock characters from the fabula Atellana, but questions the reference to the figure of Manducus in Rud. 535536 – it is unclear whether Plautus is alluding to the figure carried during the pompa circensis or to the stock character from the farce. Moreover, the author agrees with J. Christopher B. Lowe’s hypothesis that the parasite Ergasilus from Captivi resembles Dossennus from Atellana and develops this idea further, noticing that the references to chattering teeth and the mouth gaping wide are the characteristic elements in the portrayal of Dossennus-Manducus and that they also occur in the descriptions of other Plautine parasites. To prove this theory the author analyses several passages from the Plautine comedies: Captivi (vv. 909–915), Stichus (vv. 577; 605) and Curculio (vv. 317–325) – thus the author tries to show the possible influence of the Atellan stock character of Dossennus-Manducus on the presentation of the parasite in palliata.

Some thoughts on the military capabilities of Alexios I Komnenos: battles of Dyrrachion (1081) and Dristra (1087)

Alexios I Komnenos belongs to the most important emperors of the Byzantine history. Yet, in many respects, this period still remains an underdeveloped field of study. This paper attempts to review one of the aspects of his reign, namely his capabilities as a military commander since he owed much of his success in restoring the fortunes of Byzantium to his strong military background. In order to succeed in the final evaluation, most of the relevant military events during Alexios Komnenos’ life and career in which he took personal part will be briefly reviewed and taken into consideration. Particular cases where Alexios Komnenos was allegedly responsible for a serious military defeat will be discussed in more detail (e.g. battle of Dyrrachion in 1081 and battle of Dristra in 1087) in order to assess whether it was solely Alexios Komnenos’ responsibility, or whether the causes of defeat were not result of his faulty decision-making as a military commander.

Negative concord in classical Greek case study : Xenophon

Ancient Greek has at its disposal a complex system of negatives (n-words and negators) that can combine in different ways. Drawing on Xenophon’s works, I will show various patterns reflecting the combinations of negatives (negator and n-words) in Ancient Greek sentences; due to its relatively free word order, the place of negative elements may vary considerably. I pay special attention to n-words and negative spread, which is markedly developed in Ancient Greek, and examine the differences between non-strict negative concord languages (like Italian and Spanish) and specific non-strict negative concord languages (like Ancient Greek), arguing for scalar properties of negation.

The paper examines the means of expressing indirect (inferentive and reportative) evidentiality in Latin narrative prose of I–II A. D. on the material Petron’s Satyricon and Apuleius’ Metamorphoses. Morphological forms and syntactic constructions treated as evidential strategies are taken into account, since their main meanings are within the pattern of the grammatical categories (tense, mood etc.), and the information about the source and/or means of access to information is contextually motivated side effect. The result of the research reveals singling out eight strategies to express indirect evidentiality. Inferentive evidentiality is represented by five evidential strategies, while the reportative – by the three. Different use of evidential strategies in both works relates to context and personal choice of the authors.

Socrates on deception, thievery and violence: towards situational ethics?

A. Kalaš, František Škvrnda
The following paper examines special groups of testimony from the Socratic literature on Socrates’ attitude towards unethical forms of behaviour. The first group of texts consists of reflections on the problem of deception and the dilemma of whether it is always right to speak the truth. The next group reflects how various writers of Socratica (Aristophanes, Xenophon, Plato, Antisthenes) interpreted the moral value of thievery. The third group describes Socratic argumentation with regard to violent modes of conduct, such as slavery and beating. It reveals that our extant ancient sources depict Socrates’ positive evaluation of certain forms of lying, stealing, swearing and even beating and that Socrates was a moral relativist in a sense, judging in light of the situational context, which constitutes the moral value of action.

The first group of texts consists of reflections on the problem of deception and the dilemma of whether it is always right to speak the truth. The next group reflects how various writers of Socratica (Aristophanes, Xenophon, Plato, Antisthenes) interpreted the moral value of thievery. The third group describes Socratic argumentation with regard to violent modes of conduct, such as slavery and beating. It reveals that our extant ancient sources depict Socrates’ positive evaluation of certain forms of lying, stealing, swearing and even beating and that Socrates was a moral relativist in a sense, judging in light of the situational context, which constitutes the moral value of action.","PeriodicalId":38376,"journal":{"name":"Graeco-Latina Brunensia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71348741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
