The aim of this paper is to discuss the major differences and similarities between the Corpus of Polish Sign Language (KPJM), which has been developed for a decade by the team of the Section for Sign Linguistics, Faculty of Polish Studies, University of Warsaw, and corpora of phonic languages (and in particular the National Corpus of Polish (NKJP)). The KPJM is a general corpus with an ambition to represent the whole language, used by the Polish Deaf. Unlike the corpora of phonic languages, which are collections of existing texts, the material of the KPJM was generated purposefully by recording and annotating an extensive set of videos. The paper shows that the sign language corpus should be viewed as analogous to spoken language corpora rather than to written language corpora. The KPJM can be perceived as a model of Polish Sign Language.

The new lexis related to food: on the material of the Language Observatory of the University of Warsaw. An attempt to reconstruct the structure of the thematic fi eld. The aim of this paper is to analyse the thematic fi eld FOOD created from new lexical units extracted from the dictionary of neologisms of the Language Observatory of the University of Warsaw. The units will be assigned to specifi c thematic sub-fi elds. The structure of the fi eld will be analysed. The differences between two collections of vocabulary belonging to the fi eld FOOD, i.e. vocabulary rooted in the Polish language and the most recent vocabulary, will be identifi ed.

This paper is an attempt to reconstruct the picture of a groundbreaking historical event captured in oral accounts from Warmia. To this end, terms from the fi eld of ethnolinguistics, in particular linguistic worldview and point of view, have been applied. The analysis of the texts has revealed a clear opposition marked by lexemes polski (Polish) and niemiecki (German) and their derivatives as well as positive evaluation of what is local (Warmian). At the lexical level, borrowings from German (welować ‘to elect’), dialectal lexis (poszczwać ‘to bait’) and a signifi cant share of collocations referring to the situation of elections (odprawiać wiece) can be distinguished. What plays an important role in the picture of the plebiscite is the language exponents of negative phenomena and emotions, e.g. acts of violence, feeling of fear. The predominant stylistic devices employed are metonyms and metaphors.

The paper shows the changes in the meaning of the word pomocnik (a helper). This lexeme has always existed in the Polish language, but it referred only to people in Old Polish. In later times, it started to be used as the name of plants and the animals that helped the police or disabled people. Now the meaning is much broader. The aim of the paper is to determine the ways of metaphorising land and its crops by inhabitants of the Kłobuck county associated with agriculture. The metaphor is understood according to the assumptions of the cognitive stream of linguistics, i.e. as a linguistic means of conceptualising reality, and not only as a stylistic means. The analyses are aimed not only at describing the lexical resources of the subjects, but above all at determining the forms of their thinking and acting. One hundred inhabitants of the Kłobuck county took part in the survey. A half of them were between 20 and 40 years old, while the other half were at least 65 years old. The research tool was an interview questionnaire consisting of four questions. The questions were open-ended in order to decode the metaphor of land and its crops. The research made it possible to draw unambiguous conclusions about the conceptual tendencies manifested by both groups of respondents.

Shepherd’s purse is a common weed in Poland. Its various colloquial and dialectal names can be found in the literature dedicated to herbalism, yet there is no linguistic study on this subject. This issue is discussed in this paper. Using an online survey, the contemporary Polish names of the plant have been collected. The material is composed of 33 names analysed in terms of classifi cation into variants of Polish, geographical distribution, semantic motivation. A unit used within a limited geographical area is chleb babajagi, with its centre in Greater Poland. The names chlebek świętojański, Boży chlebek, babi chlebek, chleb, chlebek, chlebki are colloquial in turn.

Applied Polish studies are a currently developed research area and university teaching practice combining the traditional philological Polish studies with other scientifi c disciplines based on inter- and transdisciplinary academic collaboration principles to meet the needs arising from the performance of tasks assigned to specifi c professions requiring a background in Polish studies in the fi eld of linguistic, literary and cultural studies. Originally developed by Stanisław Dubisz, the concept became a stimulus for establishing the Institute of Applied Polish Studies at the University of Warsaw and similar units at other Polish universities. This text shows the potential of a continued support for the development of applied Polish studies as an integrative research concept and associates it with the concepts of the Polish applied linguistics and applied languages studied at Western European universities.
