The intensively developing Polish-Korean contacts and direct access to the knowledge of South Korea as one of the major East Asian countries obtained from Internet and media coverage have resulted in Korean toponyms being assimilated in the Polish language to an increasing extent. However, they are adapted in a number of ways, being mediated through two main systems of Latinising the Korean language, i.e. the McCune-Reischauer transcription and the modified MOE transcription, which is officially propagated by Korean authorities. This leads to a certain competition between the two systems, which are, moreover, often used in the situation of not only lack of command of the source language itself, but also ignorance of the conventional rules of the Latin transcription of Korean geographical names, which are different in both transcriptions. Moreover, toponyms must be assimilated based on various compromises between the phonological system of the source language and the system of the receiving language. Such a helpful compromise might be an additionally used Polonised transcription in the resource of letter symbols, but this requires substantial adjustments and additions as well as unavoidable concessions to make it easier for Polish recipients to decipher texts about Korea. From the perspective of historical standardisation of some characteristic Korean toponyms in Polish publications, various transcription tools, methods of their assimilation and adaptations, as well as the obvious cognitive barriers might become definitely more pronounced and informative for both text authors and recipients

The borrowing mentee occurs in the Polish language mainly in the area concerned with professional development. The noun is semantically close e.g. to the word podopieczny, yet its emotional load seems to be more positive than that of other semantically similar lexemes. The borrowing mentee has not be recorded in dictionaries of Polish yet; its meaning has been discussed based on contextual usages.

This article is devoted to issues in the literary culture of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth of the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries. The material of prefaces to an anonymous recipient attached to works of 1675–1739 served as the basis for analysing the statements concerning the process of reception and the act of reading. The results of the analysis indicate that the authors of the prefaces perceived a crisis of readership and interest in books. To this end, they activated the audience for attentive and engaged reading. Moreover, the authors declared that they adapted the form and content of the works to the needs and tastes of readers. Going beyond the traditionally established convention of using topical motifs, they otten extolled their off erings in direct, concise but succinct messages, which alludes to the characteristics of advertising language.

The purpose of this article is to show the peculiarities of a criminal threat as a criminal speech act. Its first part is devoted to outlining the concept of criminal speech acts as ones the performance of which may entail criminal consequences. The second part deals with a threat understood as a speech act in the context of linguistics, and the third part discusses a criminal threat as a criminal speech act, taking into account its characteristics under Polish law. The issues addressed in the article are interdisciplinary in nature, combining issues from both linguistics as a human science and law as a social science. The linguistic approach to threat is based on cognitive pragmatic analysis.

This article concerns the culinary vocabulary of the Northern Borderlands. The subject matter of the discussions is phrasemes limited to the ones that are common to the language communities mixing in the territory of Lithuania for a long time: Lithuanians, Belarusians, Poles, and Russians. The language material comes from the Vilnius press of the period 1960–1979 and book publications printed in Soviet Lithuania in 1949–1985. It was selected from among around 120 multi-word culinary units of the Northern Borderlands according to one formula: namely, a phraseme used in the same meaning and form in Lithuanian Polish, in Russian, Belarusian, and Lithuanian.

The subject matter of the analysis in this article is the phenomenon of hyperbolisation in mass media communication, which is often encountered in the public sphere. A hyperbola is a verbal construction (a rhetorical figure as well as a clue) with a special linguistic potential, often used for advertising, expressive, commentary, and ludic purposes. The impression of semanƟtic excess and the process of creating the convention of the aesthetics of overstatement and exaggerayion in the media message are ensured by specific linguistic means, including: appropriate types of lexis, phraseologisms, diverse metaphors, morphological measures, and a supra-linguistic context. It turns out that hyperbolisation is one of the linguistic determinants of mass culture. It makes the media message more attractive, strengthens its persuasive power, is emotional, fresh, and linguistically original. This article presents the results of an analysis covering a portion of the vocabulary found in Wacław Potocki’s literary works. The examinayion of the lexical structure of the poet’s writings was limited to the biblical proper names coming from the three-volume edition of the poet’s Dzieła (Works) (Kukulski 1987). The material was excerpted using the corpus method and the Electronic Corpus of 17th- and 18th-century Polish Texts (until 1772). The aim of this article is to divide the collected biblisms according to the onomastic classification and to discuss the findings of their functional analysis. The Bible was a significant source of creative and ideological inspiration for the 17th-century author, which was reflected in the presented collection of proper names, with the anthroponyms that fulfilled allusive and content functions winning the greatest share. The study is concluded with a compilation of the outcomes of the comparative analysis performed with regard to the frequency of biblical proper names, cetified in W. Potocki’s Dzieła and in the corpus of Baroque texts.

The issue of nomenclature for mixed breed animals has been taken up by Polish researchers many times and its significance for onomastic and dialectal research has been emphasised often enough. With respect to the North-Eastern Borderlands, sparse studies have been dedicated to it so far. Therefore, this paper discusses linguistic and cultural contacts reflected in proper names of two species of mixed breed animals in the Vilnius Region. The material was collected using the traditional and online survey method. This article presents the phonetic and morphological characteristics typical of the Polish of the Borderlands, lexical features, and nomenclature influences that were discovered while analysing zoonyms. It discusses the influences of the Lithuanian, Russian, and Belarusian languages on the nomenclature for animals living in households of people of Polish descent in the Vilnius Region

A decade ago, in 2012, a social campaign titled “Citizen-friendly plain language” was announced and the First Congress of Official Language was held. Since then the idea of plain language has been developing in Poland – in both public administration and business. It consists in formulating communications such that they can be read quickly and understood when being read for the first time. This article aims to compile and describe the major entities, intiatives, and actions concerned with simplification of communication (plain language) in Poland.
