ABSTRACT Parental stress increases child behaviour problems, and mindful parenting is suggested to be a potential moderator. The aim of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting (IM-P) scale in Taiwan Chinese and investigate the relationship of mindful parenting with parent and child mental health. Exploratory factor analysis and moderation analysis were examined in a sample (N = 201) of parents in Taiwan. A three-factor structure was found with adequate internal consistency. Significant correlations were found between mindful parenting, parental stress, child behaviour problems, and social support from family. Non-judgmental acceptance of the child as a sub-scale of mindful parenting was a significant moderator of the relationship between parental stress and child behaviour problems. Mindful parenting should be further promoted in social work practice and research so that more Chinese families can benefit.

ABSTRACT Globally, mental illness ranks first among the causes of disability. In China, 17.5% of individuals have a mental illness, with only 150 people per 100,000 people receiving treatment for their diagnosis. To effectively address the growing unmet mental health needs in China, it is essential that China develops and adapts evidence-based and empirically supported treatment interventions. Although many researchers have begun to disseminate their interventions globally, the literature currently lacks well-defined guidelines for cultural adaptation. To address this gap in the literature, the objectives of this article are to 1) review stages of intervention science and the importance of intervention development in China; 2) examine cultural adaptation processes drawn from the literature; and 3) develop guidelines for the cultural adaptation of mental health interventions in China.

ABSTRACT In Hong Kong, the hostility, stigma and discrimination against sexual minorities is prevalent. HEvolution are a community initiative founded in 2017, aiming to promote physical, mental, social and spiritual health among gay men in Hong Kong. This study investigated the roles of social demographics, mindfulness and self-kindness, and gay life-related variables in predicting their overall well-being. T-tests, chi-square tests, correlation analyses and hierarchical multiple regression were conducted to investigate the relationships between variables of interest. Results found that close relationships existed between mindfulness, self-compassion, gay life identity and well-being in gay men. It suggests that the promotion of holistic health and mindfulness among Hong Kong gay men can be beneficial to their psychological and overall well-being.

ABSTRACT This study assessed the depression status of transgender individuals and their personality profiles for seeing the psychological functioning. We further compared their status with cisgender individuals and explored the role of personality profiles in explaining the variance of depression level among transgender and cisgender individuals. Seventy-one transgender individuals and seventy-three cisgender individuals were investigated in Shanghai Mental Health Centre. The general depression level and personality profiles of transgender individuals remained normative range, but percentages of transgender individuals who reported moderate or major symptoms and poor personality profiles were significantly higher than those of cisgender counterparts. Subscale scores of paranoia and psychopathic deviate significantly contributed to the variance of depression level among transgender people in multiple regression model. This study sheds light on the psychological needs of transgender people, which provided healthcare providers with the implications of developing psychological intervention programmes and mental health services.

ABSTRACT This cross-sectional study investigated the cumulative effect of risk factors for depressive symptoms. The primary hypothesis was that an increase in the risk factor exposure is associated with the odds of adolescent depression. A multi-stage cluster sampling method was administered to recruit participants. 1,306 Taiwanese high school students aged 15 to 18 completed self-report questionnaires to report their levels of individual risk factor and depressive symptoms. Risk factors under investigation included low self-esteem, family economic constrain, parent-adolescent conflict, negative peer relationship and academic expectation stress. All risk factors significantly predict adolescents’ risk for developing depression. A graded dose-response relationship was observed, meaning the odds of having depression rose along with an increase in the cumulative risk index. The findings yield support for the individual and cumulative effects of these salient risk factor on adolescent depression. The cumulative risk index can provide a useful instrument for depression screening and intervention.

ABSTRACT It is particularly important to consider the psychological pathways between intergenerational support and health in the context of immigration, as individuals are often subject to interrupted or lost social ties and consequently increased vulnerabilities to stress, feelings of loneliness and depression. This study investigated the relationship between intergenerational support and self-rated health among older Chinese immigrants; and whether and to what extent depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between such support and health. Data came from a regional study using purposive sampling of 236 older Chinese immigrants in the United States. Path analysis was used to study direct and indirect effects (mediation) from intergenerational support to health. Receipt of personal care was directly associated with better self-rated health. Depressive symptoms mediated the relationship between emotional support and self-rated health. Besides strengthening and encouraging personal care and emotional support from adult children, interventions need to address depressive symptoms to promote optimal health.

ABSTRACT Past research has consistently reported a higher rate of drug use before arrest among incarcerated inmates than that of the general population. However, there is a lack of either qualitative or quantitative research on this topic under the Chinese setting. Drawing upon survey data collected from 1,518 inmates in a Chinese province, this study attempts to fill in the research gap by assessing the connection between risk factors associated with pre-arrest use. Roughly a quarter of all inmates in the sample had the experience of drug use before arrest. Regression analysis suggested that impulsivity, volatile temper, and perceived prevalence of drug use in neighborhood were significantly related to drug use among inmates. Two control variables include offense type and stable job, were also found to be significant predictors of drug use. Implications for research and policy were highlighted in the end.
