Purpose: In recent years, research has yielded new information regarding the impact of intense, long-term alcohol consumption on the development of permanent changes in the central nervous system. The present study examines the mechanisms related to the existence of addiction memory, sensitization and allostasis. A dual-process model was also created, which analyses the role of conscious and automatic mechanisms in the functioning of addicts. The aim of the article is to present these mechanisms and to consider the implications of their existence for the course of therapy.

Views: The mechanisms analysed shed new light on some of the negative phenomena occurring during and after therapy, such as frequent abstinence after treatment, switching addictions, and returning to drinking after a long period of abstinence. The existence of these mechanisms should also change the character of addiction therapy, which has so far focused mainly on conscious aspects and ignored the existence of automatic ones. Attempts are already being made to implement the dual-process model in addiction therapy.

Conclusions: A better understanding of the mechanisms resulting from the dual-process model can significantly influence perspectives regarding functioning in addiction and the course of therapy. These processes merit further research, as do possible therapeutic interventions based on them.

Phonotherapy – a new biological treatment proposal for the augmentationof pharmacotherapy in psychiatry and neurology

Purpose: Phonotherapy is a new type of biological treatment in psychiatry. It is a modern form of music therapy in which selected musical frequencies are used for treatment, which may have a health-promoting effect. The aim of this study was to review the available research on the use of phonotherapy in medicine, as well as to present the perspectives for its use. Views: So far, there have been several interesting studies on the effectiveness of phonotherapy in the treatment of depression, fibromyalgia and in alleviating the effects of stress. In small groups of patients, it has been shown to positively affect mood, improve anhedonia and relieve pain. All the studies involving human subjects have demonstrated the effectiveness and good tolerance of phonotherapy. An experimental study was also carried out with mouse models of dementia syndromes indicating the potential beneficial effect of phonotherapy in the treatment of dementia. The researchers found that phonotherapy can increase the number of oligodendrocytes and reduce the accumulation of b-amyloid deposits. On the basis of that research it was possible to create both an experimental and, so far, hypothetical clinical model explaining the mechanism of phonotherapy. Conclusions: Phonotherapy is a new proposed form of biological treatment that may be effective in the treatment of depressive and stress-related disorders as well as dementia. A new mobile application, lifeAPP, discussed in the article, may be useful in conducting research on the effectiveness of phonotherapy. The results of the studies conducted to date on the influence of phonotherapy on humans are promising; however, it is necessary to conduct further studies involving larger groups of patients.

What is presented on pornographic material? Quantitative analysis of pornographic images

Purpose: The aim of the study was to determine the variables presented in given categories of pornographic material, which may contribute to determining key objects for given types of pornographic materials that can cause sexual arousal. Pornographic mate rials are defined as pictures or videos produced to elicit sexual arousal in recipients, however, pornographic materials are not homo genous. However, currently it is assumed that viewing pornographic material by adults does not always have to lead to negative consequences, but there are areas of use of pornographic material that can be considered from a mental health perspective. It is accessing specific pornographic materials related to sexual fantasies, the implementation of which would be difficult or impossible in everyday life. Methods: 4,500 images belonging to one of the nine categories of pornographic material were analyzed. Basic descriptive statistics were calculated and the relationship between variables was examined. Results: Sexual activity and nudity were rare in fetishtype materials, except for materials classified as BDSM. The materials were mostly dominated by one type of object (fetish), but there were other objects as well. Conclusions: The presented results allow to conclude that it is easy to get access to materials that can be a source of sexual arousal for people with less prevalent sexual preferences. In addition, for fetish pornographic material, depiction of genitals or sexual activity was rare, suggesting that fetish preferences are a sufficient condition for recognizing this type of material as sexually stimulating for people with certain paraphilias.
