This evaluation aims to provide insight into trainees’ experience of delivering cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) whilst on placement. Thematic analysis was employed to analyse data from a focus group consisting of trainees on a selected clinical doctorate programme. Results highlighted the importance of supervisors’ CBT background, teaching focused on the structure and the providing of materials, and trainees’ reactions to CBT. Future directions were suggested for enhancing CBT training and further evaluation.

A service evaluation was undertaken to learn about the consistency of outcome data collection by a psychology service within the NHS. Nine clinical psychologists (CPs), were interviewed to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. An analysis of quantitative data was carried out and represented using graphs. The qualitative data was analysed using thematic analysis, and the results are discussed. The analysis from the quantitative data showed a discrepancy between outcome measures collected at the start of an intervention compared to the end of an intervention. The attitudes of these nine CPs were also collected through interviews, and the analysis showed an overall positive attitude towards outcome measures, suggesting that this did not have an impact on outcome collection. However, the analysis of the qualitative data found possible themes which could explain why outcome measures are not collected consistently. These themes were: ‘forgetfulness’, ‘responsibility’, ‘internal struggle’ and ‘outcome measure needs to change’. Recommendations are discussed based on the findings of this service evaluation.

There is increasing recognition and action in the recent years to widen participation in the clinical psychology workforce. It continues to be important to promote diversity in the workforce so that it reflects the population it serves. However, much of the recent efforts have focused predominantly on diversity characteristics of ethnicity and race and much less so on other equally important diversity characteristics like socioeconomic status or class. This study explores the experiences of 275 trainee and aspiring clinical psychologists, self-identifying as from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background, on the practical and perceptual barriers they have faced in their clinical psychology journey. Recommendations for Doctorate of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) courses to support this underrepresented group in the field are provided.

This article explores the reflections of psychologists from working with healthcare staff on the frontline during the Covid-19 pandemic. The psychological impact of the pandemic on healthcare staff is discussed using a compassion-based approach. Consideration is given to possible lessons to take forward from this time to psychologically protect staff against potential future periods of crisis and the ongoing difficulties facing health service organisations.
