Change in the terpenoid profile and secondary growth in declining stands of Pinus sylvestris L. under Mediterranean influence as a response to local factors 地中海影响下西洋松凋落林分萜类成分和次生生长的变化及其对当地因素的响应

The terpenoid profile could give information about the water status in Scots pine, especially for trees growing in the same geographical area but under contrasting local environmental conditions. Terpenes were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in needles, twigs and wood of ten affected and ten unaffected Scots pines in the southern “Sistema Iberico” range (Teruel, Spain), where forest decline has been recently reported. Soil depth and secondary growth was also studied in both types of trees. Needles and twigs total resin acids were significantly higher in affected trees. The pimarane type resin acids were also higher in the twigs of affected trees. Secondary growth was lower in affected trees and it showed higher climate sensitivity. The use of the terpenoid profile may be used as an additional tool for the estimation of the water status, especially for situations inducing moderate but relatively prolonged stress conditions.

Respuesta hidrológica del Pirineo central al cambio ambiental proyectado para el siglo XXI 中央比利牛斯山脉对21世纪预计环境变化的水文响应

Streamflows in five Mediterranean mountain headwaters in the central Spanish Pyrenees were projected under various climate and land use change scenarios. Streamflows were simulated using the Regional Hydro-Ecologic Simulation System (RHESSys). The results show that changes in precipitation and temperature could cause a decline of annual streamflow between 13% and 23%, depending on the considered catchment. When the effect of increased forest cover in the basins is added to climate change effects, the decrease in annual streamflow is enhanced up to 19% and 32%. The largest hydrological changes resulting from environmental change are projected mainly in early spring, summer and autumn, when the decline may exceed 40%. Winter is the least affected season by environmental change because of increased runoff as a consequence of reduced storage of water in the snowpack and an earlier onset of the snowmelt, and the lower consumption of water by vegetation during the cold season. The magnitude of hydrological change as a result of the assumed environmental change scenarios may lead to serious impacts on water management and ecology of the studied region, as well as the water availability in the Ebro basin.

Diferencias en la evolución del paisaje entre dos municipios Prepirenaicos: Alquézar y Valle de Lierp, en la segunda mitad del siglo XX 20世纪下半叶比利牛斯山脉前的两个城市:alquezar和Valle de Lierp的景观演变差异

Rapid socio-economical global changes happened during the second half of the 20th century, have radically altered territorial management in rural areas of the Mediterranean mountains, specifically, in the Pre Pyrenees (Huesca). Population decrease in young and economically active members, plus the change of the productive model entailed a land use transformation and subsequent landscape changes. Although the general model of landscape change is based on the decrease of human pressure on this territory, we should also take into account local characteristics related to biophysical and historical features. The comparison between two Pre Pyrenean municipalities: Alquezar and Valle de Lierp, shows these local differences, contextualized by the analyses of the Pre Pyrenean landscape composition. Consequently, a retrospective and multiscale study focused on the two sample municipalities –considering those as an operational management unit–, has been done. We have assessed landscape composition, configuration and structure on those units through component analyses, transition models and landscape indices. The methodological development of this work has been simplified by the use of GIS (ARC GIS 9) and FRAGSTAT, software of landscape ecology metrics.

Wingless snow flies Chionea spp are highly specialized winter active arthropods of the supranivean fauna, for which little is known yet about their life history and ecology. Of the seven European species of the subgenus Chionea (Sphaeconophilus) , four are known from or can be expected to occur in the Pyrenees: C. pyrenaea Bourne 1981, C. bezzii Oosterbroek & Reusch 2008, C. alpina Bezzi 1908 and C. lutescens Lundstrom 1907. The former two are possible endemic species only known from one location and only from male individuals. In this paper we update the distribution and illustrate for the first time the habitus of the female of C. pyrenaea and give a new synthesis of the current distribution of snow flies in the Pyrenees. In the context of a projected increase in temperature and snowpack reduction in depth and duration, we point the vulnerability of these species to global climate change.

A comparative study was carried out among stands of Pinus uncinata Ram. located, respectively, in La Massana (Andorra) and in the Catalonian Pyrenees, and give these sites an important role against snow avalanches. To check if there exist some differential attributes between Andorran and Catalonian sites, a dendrometric database was generated from sampling (Andorra) and from the information provided by the Third Forest National Inventory (Catalonian Pyrenees). As for their tendency towards uneven-aged stand structure, both geographical regions are quite similar. In fact, stand regeneration is not associated to other stocking variables, and stand stocking is not closely linked to the altitudinal gradient (which little affects mortality). However, Catalonian stands have shown less stocking and, in general, they offer worse characteristics for their protective role against avalanches compared with the Andorran stands.

In December 2012, the first Jornadas IPErinas took place at the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (CSIC). The aim of this meeting was to show many of the new research topics that nowadays are being developed in the Institute. This workshop grew out of the need to disseminate the main new research lines developed at the center, as a fundamental part of scientific communication and knowledge transfer to society. In this paper, we briefly review the topics presented in the first meeting Jornadas IPErinas, summarizing the oral contributions.

This article assesses the territorial impact of the ski industry in two areas of the Spanish Pyrenees (Aragon Pyrenees and the Catalan High Pyrenees). By analyzing the changes on demographic dynamics and structure, economic portfolio, and evolution of the built structure of these areas since the construction of the ski resorts, we, firstly, identify a trend towards urbanization emerging in these areas, and secondly, that this trend unfolds in two different models: around the ski resorts at the northern end of valleys in the Aragon study site, and in regional centers at the bottom of the main valleys in the Catalan High Pyrenees. In this fashion the ski industry, which offers seasonal services to a mostly urban clientele, contributes to the redefinition of peripheral rural areas taking into account urban needs. The towns, by the ski resorts in Aragon, and in the bottom of the valleys in Catalonia, have grown to become small nodes of a large network that expands the physical, economic and cultural influence of the low lands cities over the Spanish mountains.

By analyzing the changes on demographic dynamics and structure, economic portfolio, and evolution of the built structure of these areas since the construction of the ski resorts, we, firstly, identify a trend towards urbanization emerging in these areas, and secondly, that this trend unfolds in two different models: around the ski resorts at the northern end of valleys in the Aragon study site, and in regional centers at the bottom of the main valleys in the Catalan High Pyrenees. In this fashion the ski industry, which offers seasonal services to a mostly urban clientele, contributes to the redefinition of peripheral rural areas taking into account urban needs. Viabilidad del hábitat y del reforzamiento poblacional de Capra pirenaica en la Reserva Nacional de Caza de Os Ancares 奥斯安卡拉斯国家狩猎保护区比利牛斯卡普拉的栖息地可行性和种群增强

Iberian wild goat Capra pyrenaica has been re-introduced in the Cantabrian Mountains in Leon province (Riano and Ancares). To evaluate habitat and restocking suitability in the National Game Reserve of Os Ancares (NGRA, Lugo province) we: (i) undertook a reconstruction of its natural history in the NW of the Iberian Peninsula; (ii) gathered data on its current distribution in Ancares; (iii) analyzed its habitat use though a review of similar experiences; (iv) developed a cartography to define its potential habitat, and y v) drew a zoning of the NGRA following habitat quality. Results indicate the existence of suitable habitat in 1,250, which could host 40 animals considering a density of 3 goat km -2 . The management of this population should we coordinated with the leonese side of the massif, of higher quality and surface rather than the Lugo’s slope. The increase of the current population will allow the species to colonize naturally the whole massif.

Monitoring lichens diversity and climatic change in Sierra Nevada (Spain) 内华达山脉地衣多样性与气候变化监测(西班牙)

Lichens are common organisms in high mountain zones, where they play an important role in ecosystem balance. In recent years, the increasing interest in understanding more about their interactions with abiotic factors has prompted several investigations, some of which have proved their value as bioindicators of climatic conditions. In this context, focusing on climatic change effects on high mountain vascular plants and supported by the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments project (GLORIA), we have monitored for the first time the lichens biodiversity in Sierra Nevada with the intention of studying the alterations caused by the process of climatic change. The aim of this paper is to explain the monitoring experience developed on the massif and contribute to the first results from the biodiversity and statistical analysis of the sampling data.

Patterns of endemism along an elevation gradient in Sierra Nevada (Spain) and Lefka Ori (Crete, Greece) 内华达山脉(西班牙)和莱夫卡奥里(希腊克里特岛)沿海拔梯度的特有模式

Aim: High mountains in the Mediterranean region of Europe are particularly rich in endemic vascular plants. We aimed to compare the altitudinal patterns of vascular plant species richness and the proportion of endemic species in two Mediterranean region: Lefka Ori on the island of Crete (Greece) and Sierra Nevada on the Iberian peninsula. Location: Sierra Nevada, Granada (Spain); Lefka Ori, Crete (Greece). Methods: Data from standardised permanent plots settings on summit sites (comprising eight plot sectors, covering the upeermost 10 altitudinal metres) of different elevations were used (GLORIA Multi-Summit approach; www.gloria.ac.at). Species numbers, rates of endemic species, and soils temperature were compared by means of ANCOVA and linear regression. Results: The two regions, though climatically similar, showed strikingly different patterns: In Sierra Nevada, the proportion of endemic vascular plants (species restricted to Sierra Nevada) showed a stepwise increase from the lowest to the highest summit. In contrast, the proportion of endemic species restricted to Crete was not significantly different between the four summits in Lefka Ori. In both regions the observed trends were largely consistent with the altitudinal distribution of the endemic species obtained from standard floras. Main conclusions: The geographic positions of the two regions, i.e. island versus mainland and the higher elevation of Sierra Nevada are suggested to be the primary causes of the observed differences. The high degree of endemism in the cold environments of Mediterranean mountains’ upper bioclimatic zones indicates a pronounced vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. A continued and intensified species monitoring in the mountains around the Mediterranean basin, therefore, should be considered as a priority research task.
