Financial Literacy and Financial Performance of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises 中小企业财务素养与财务绩效

R esearch Aims: The study aims to examine the influence of financial literacy on the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach: The data were obtained from questionnaires distributed to 200 SME managers/owners. Multiple regression analysis was applied to test the influence of financial literacy on SMEs performance by controlling manager profile and SME-specific characteristics. Research Findings: Multiple regression results prove that financial literacy has a positive and significant impact on SMEs' performance. Managers/owners with financial literacy skills understand business-related financial concepts, including debt, savings, takaful, insurance, and investment, which ensure the good performance of their business. Theoretical Contribution/Originality: Similar research has been conducted outside Malaysia. However, there is a need to validate the financial literacy and SME performance relationship in the Malaysian environment due to differences in culture; ways of thinking; and legal, business, and political situations. These differences lead to different responses which then contribute to the way the effect of financial literacy on SME performance is explained. In addition, this study improves the consistency of the existing evidence on SME performance and expands the scope of the Resource-Based View (RBV) from the perspective of SMEs Research limitation & i mplications: Government agencies such as SME Corporation recognise the importance of financial literacy among entrepreneurs. Therefore, proactive efforts need to be accelerated to provide an adequate level of financial literacy among entrepreneurs. Furthermore, entrepreneurial finance can be introduced in formal and non-formal education to ensure that every layer of society enjoys the benefits regardless of their economic status.

Night-Market Traders Are They Entrepreneurial or Just Making Ends Meet? 夜市商贩:创业还是勉强维持生计?

"Research Aims - Night-market is a popular type of micro-business in Southeast Asia. The purpose of this research is to examine night markets from the perspective of business development, a perspective that has received limited attention from the literature. Design/methodology/approach - A total of 300 questionnaires were distributed amongst nightmarket business owners in a selected venue around Penang. Data were analyzed using SEM-PLS to measure the variables proposed in the study. Research Findings - The results of this study showed that commitment and business experience is significantly related to business development while government assistance yields no relationship. The age of the business owner has a significant moderating impact on the effect of commitment and business experience on business development and, again, no impact on the effect of government assistance. Theoretical Contribution/Originality - This study argues that the presumption that all microbusinesses have an entrepreneurial character should be treated with skepticism. It is important to differentiate between being entrepreneurship and making end meets. Managerial Implication in the South East Asian context - Managerial Implication in the Southeast Asian Context: The present study suggests that operating a night-market business and passing it down from generation to generation while at the same time aiming for it to grow bigger is unrealistic. Research limitation & implications - This study has several limitations. First, due to time and geographical constraints, the sample size was limited to 300, and the data were collected only in Penang. Secondly, the study did not consider whether the business owners (night-market traders) were first generation owners, second generation, or beyond."

The Influence of Japanese Work Cultures on Malaysian Foodservice Employees' Work Stress and Their Turnover Intention 日本工作文化对马来西亚餐饮员工工作压力及离职倾向的影响

"Research Aims - This study investigates the influence of Japanese work cultures on Malaysian foodservice employees’ work stress and their turnover intention. Design/methodology/approach - A total of 381 respondents participated in this study, and the research data was validated prior to the empirical assessment. Research Findings - The results of this study signify that the Japanese work culture amplifies workers disorientation, stress and turnover intention. Besides, thru hierarchical regression, workplace stress was found to mediate the relationship between Japanese work culture and employee turnover intention. Theoretical Contribution/Originality - The study reveals the conflicts between the South East Asian employees and the Japanese management culture in the foodservice industry. Managerial Implication in the South East Asian context - This study contributes to the organisational and human resource management literature by examining the direct and indirect effects of Japanese work culture on employees’ workplace stress and their turnover intention in the context of the restaurant industry. Research limitation & implications - As for the study limitation, the current study does not cover all Japanese restaurant in Malaysia as the researchers focus on the Klang Valley setting."

Building A Theoretical Research Model for Trust Development: The Case of Mobile Financial Services in Myanmar 构建信任发展的理论研究模型——以缅甸移动金融服务为例

"Research Aims - This research study focuses on the factors affecting customer trust in mobile financial services (MFS) in Myanmar by developing a research model that incorporates six different factors: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, social pressure, enabling conditions, service quality, and satisfaction. Design/Methodology/Approach - Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were employed to analyse the data. Subsequently, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was utilised to examine hypotheses. An analysis was performed on the survey data collected from 250 mobile phone users who are likely to use or currently using MFS in Myanmar. Research Findings - The results indicate that trust in MFS is significantly influenced by enabling conditions, service quality and satisfaction. The study also found that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and social pressure have statistically insignificant effects on trust-building in the MFS context. Theoretical Contribution/Originality - A finalised trust-development theoretical research model was formulated and proposed for utilisation in the investigation of customers’ trust in future research within a similar context. Managerial Implication in the South East Asian Context - The findings of this study are beneficial and valuable for Mobile Financial Services Providers (MFSP) in the ASEAN countries, enabling them to create suitable marketing strategies, business approaches and service infrastructures regarding their customers, thereby developing customer trust. Research Limitations and Implications - The conclusion is limited to the mobile financial services sector in Myanmar, and the opinions of non-adopters and rejectors are excluded."

Determining Criteria for Supplier Selection in the Indonesian Oil and Gas Industry 印度尼西亚石油和天然气行业供应商选择的确定标准

"Research Aims - This research aims to identify the main criteria of supplier selection in the oil and gas industry in Indonesia and their causal relationships by using the DEMATEL method. Methodology - Based on the literature review and discussions with experts, ten supplier selection criteria were identified and used as the basis of questionnaire development. The questionnaire was distributed to 57 respondents representing supply chain management and other divisions in eight oil and gas companies in Indonesia, with 51 valid responses. The data was analyzed using the DEMATEL method. Research Findings - The results show that product price is the most important criterion, while technical ability was the least important criterion. Moreover, six criteria (product quality, product price, technical ability, service, production capability, and financial situation) were identified as the cause criteria and require more attention compared to the other four effect criteria (delivery performance, stable delivery of goods, lead time, and reaction to demand change in time). Theoretical Contribution/Originality - The research provides insights on the important criteria of supplier selection in oil and gas companies in Indonesia and their causal relationships. Managerial Implications in the Southeast Asian Context - The results can be used by oil and gas companies to better select their suppliers. Research Limitations and Implications - This study uses a non-stratified sample from eight oil and gas companies in Indonesia, which may not accurately represent the Indonesian oil and gas industry."

"Research Aims - This study was undertaken to extend existing literature by examining the mediating effect of trust in supervisors in the relationship between perceived interactional fairness in reward systems and organizational commitment. Design/methodology/approach - The SmartPLS method was applied to analyze the survey questionnaire data collected from employees at a national audit department in Malaysia. Research Findings - The results reveal that the effect of perceived interactional fairness in reward systems on organizational commitment is mediated by trust in supervisors. Theoretical Contribution/Originality - This study has proved the effectiveness of perceived interactional fairness as an essential mediating variable in the administration of reward systems. Managerial Implication in the South East Asian context - The findings of this study could help superiors in public organizations to encourage and support their supervisors in implementing good treatment styles for enhancing fairness in making pay decisions and interacting with diverse subordinates. If employees trust their supervisors, it may enhance the effect of employees’ perceived fairness of reward systems on organizational commitment in public organizations in Southeast Asia. Research limitation & implications - This study is limited by its sample, self-report questionnaire scale, and exclusion of several important demographic variables (e.g., gender, age, education, position, and duration of service) in the research model."

"Research Aims - This research intends to study the extent of work-life balance and the level of satisfaction among women teachers assigned in the northernmost part of the province of Surigao del Sur and to determine if there is a significant relationship between them. Design/methodology/approach - This study used the descriptive normative and correlation method. The adopted questionnaire was modified and used. A total of 226 women teachers were chosen as respondent but only 210 participated. The data gathered from the questionnaire were tallied, tabulated, analyzed and presented in tables. Research Findings - The result shows that majority of the teachers answered “moderate extent” to the work life balance under personal and work environment and mostly “satisfied” on the level of satisfaction. It concludes that there is a significant relationship between the work life balance and level of satisfaction. Theoretical Contribution/Originality – Significant relationship between the work life balance and the level of satisfaction were tested in this study and showed that there is a relationship of work and life balance and the level of satisfaction among women teachers assigned in the northernmost part of the province of Surigao del Sur. Managerial Implications in the South Asian Context – Managers or administrators in Southeast Asian context especially in the education sector have to consider not only the work of their women employees in their institution but also their personal life because once these two balanced; this could lead to high level of job satisfaction. As an effect, this could heighten the level of commitment and their loyalty. Research limitations and recommendation – This study limits only to women teachers assigned in the northernmost part of the province of Surigao del sur. This paper offers for further research to other sectors."

Perceived Severity of Halal Violation: CSR and Consumer Boycott 违反清真食品的严重程度:企业社会责任和消费者抵制

"Research Aims: The halal industry has become one of the fastest growing business in the global market. Halal certification provides assurance to all Muslim consumers because it fulfills the Shariah law and follows the concept of halalan-toyyiban. The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of severity of halal violation and CSR on boycott towards the company that involved in halal violation incidents. Design/methodology/approach: In total of 400 questionnaires were distributed amongst customers who were aware and/or had experienced the violation of a halal product. Data were analyzed using structural equation modelling techniques, were partial least squares (PLS) software was used to measure the direct and indirect relationships between the variables. Research Findings: The result of this investigation showed that perceived severity of halal violation is significantly related to consumer boycott. Further results imply that perceived CSR not only contributes negatively to consumer boycott, but also significantly moderates the relationship perceived severity and consumer boycott. Theoretical Contribution/Originality: This study is among the earliest to include CSR from a consumer perspective, particularly in the halal retraction context. Managerial Implication in the South East Asian context: The present study suggests that Halal companies in South East Asian should be proactive in CSR initiatives in order to reduce the negative effect towards company evaluation such as boycott in case if halal violation incidents occur. Research limitation & implications: This study bears several limitations. First, this study employed purposive sampling method and the scope of the study is only limited to the customers who are aware and/or had experienced food halal violation incidents in Klang Valley, Malaysia. Hence, the results may not be able to generalise to other product categories and population."

"Research Aims - This study aims to identify the effect of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) on Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) performance. Design/methodology/approach - This study employed a multiple regression analysis. SME performance was treated as dependent variable, whereas ERM was the independent variable. Research Findings - Multiple regression analysis indicated that ERM has a significant effect to- wards firm performance. However, only one of the ERM elements namely objective determination has a significant effectt on SME performance. Theoretical Contribution/Originality - This study contributes to the body of knowledge from the standpoint of ERM by testing the effect of each element of ERM described under the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commissions (COSO) towards firm performance. Per- haps, each element of the ERM might has different effect towards an organization. Thus, Resource Based View (RBV) Theory was supported which hold that the organisational resources are the main factor to influence the organisational performance. Managerial Implication in the South East Asian context - ERM conducted in SMEs are expected to be able to develop strategies in minimising the risks that may or may not be faced by SME firms. In fact, an effective risk management can assist SME managers and owners in achieving their de- fined business objectives. Thus, risk management enhances the firm’s value, maximise profitability, and consequently improve SME performance. Research limitation & implications - This study has improved the measurement of ERM practices among SMEs and identified ERM elements that affect SME performance in particular."

Design/methodology/approach: Empirical evidence for the research was derived from a survey that collected data from 500 students in Indonesia and Thailand, analyzed using Logit Biner method with the help of software SPSS. Research Findings: The result of this study shows that there were two hypotheses accepted, H1 (optimism influences favorableness) and H3 (insecurity has an effect on favorableness), while other hypotheses (H2 and H4) are not significant.
