The main purpose of the study is to describe the nature of the phraseological units and the criteria for their clasification. Concerning the goal, the following tasks are set and fulfilled: the terms such as phraseologism, idiom are studied and described, the criteria for the allocation of phraseological units are reviewed as well as the different criteria for the selection of phraseologisms. All this allows us to form a theoretical basis for further analysis. The article highlights the features of phraseological units, identifies the criteria and their classification. The difference between the terms “idiom” and “phraseologism” is shown. The structure of phraseologisms is characterized. Criteria of stable expressions are their idiomaticity, stability (morphological, syntactic, lexico-semantic and stability of use) and word equivalence. Phraseologisms occupy an intermediate position between words and free word groups. It is noted that, on the one hand, they have features of words, and on the other hand – features of free word groups. That’s why they are sometimes difficult to distinguish. Additionally, it is stated these difficulties are exacerbated by the fact that the expressed properties of phraseologisms are expressed in various idioms in varying degrees. These difficulties are also manifested in various classifications of phraseological units, which were disassembled in this article. In our article were used such scientific methods as the method of vocabulary definitions, the descriptive method and the method of analysis in order to give the definitions of terms idiom and phraseology, to describe the criteria for classification of phraseological units and to analyze different thoughts on phraseology definition.

The article defines the notion of written control of “English for Technical Specialties” as that which may reflect the professional technical English language knowledge, abilities and skills in reading, listening, and writing and to some extent speaking. It is noted that the written control reflects objective achievement results, while the individual approach is absent, which is a drawback due to standardized evaluation criteria. Another disadvantage of written control is students’ cheating possibility. It is outlined that the written control is an optimum kind of the professional lexical units’ knowledge control as well as the grammar constructs and stylistic peculiarities of technical English. The authors define the following recommended types of written control exercises: the productive, reproductive and partially reproductive ones: multiple-choice test, filling in test, regrouping test, sentence transformation test, correcting mistakes, constructed answer test, “question – answer” test and the “translation” test. The authors recommend to group within one test sheet exercises, starting with the reproductive and partially reproductive, with the productive ones in the end. The article establishes basic principles of written control: hierarchy, management and system implementation. Due to the conducted literature data analysis and authors’ personal teaching experience the optimum written test structure has been defined as that including 4-5 tasks, consisting of 5 points each, which include control of lexical units on the theme, context of the theme, grammar constructions and the abilities and skills of listening or professional writing. The authors offer to make up the written tasks bank, grouping various tasks into various test subkinds, to be approved by the English tutors’ Council, Department of Foreign Languages or even the Faculty.

The article highlights peculiarities of the author’s individual style investigation as a part of literary text stylistics. Main attention is given to the approaches to individual style study and its place in linguistic researches of literary texts. The research aim is obtained with the help of scientific methods: generalization, conceptualization and comparison of the directions of idiostyle study in order to define the most appropriate approach for outlining the idiostylistic peculiarities of the literary texts authors. The analysis of early and current publications exploring the idiostylistic peculiarities of the author’s speech is presented. Ten basic tendencies in idiostyle investigation are separated, analyzed and compared. The conducted exploring provides the possibility to reveal that studying the language of literary texts through the prism of the author's speech analysis is one of the most relevant tasks of modern linguistics. A comparative analysis indicates that one of the most common areas of its study today is the analysis of the author's conceptual sphere in combination with the study of stylistic techniques, syntax and individual vocabulary. The combination of several approaches within a single study makes it possible to describe the peculiarities of idiostyle of a literary text writer and provide a complete understanding of the selection and synthesis principles of linguistic means by a certain author, reveal the prevailing features and outline a prototype of the individual speech model. The prospect of research is considered in defining the approaches to the author’s idiostyle study in dramatic genre.
