ABSTRACT The paper is a part of a research that has investigated the forms and functions of the it-cleft construction in contemporary written English and Czech, with specific focus on its FSP aspects. The research presents a contrastive study of the construction in translation, using InterCorp, a parallel translation corpus. The English it-cleft construction has been described in much detail in various publications. Rather less attention has been given to the construction in Czech; in general, it-clefts seem to be less frequent in Czech than in English, which is due to the fact that Czech, as an inflectional language, has a greater range of primary means of expressing FSP (such as word-order, focalizers, etc.). One of the goals of the present study is to compare the forms and frequencies of it-clefts in Czech translated and non-translated written texts in the comparable corpus Jerome in order to determine whether the English source sentence structure tends to influence the syntax of the resulting Czech translation.

Even though a number of verbs, owing to their syntactic-semantic characteristics, tend to operate primarily in Presentation or Quality Scales respectively, most verbs generally appear to be capable of acting within both the scales. In authentic communication, the sentence perspective is determined by various criteria: apart from the relative “weightiness” of the postverbal modification, it is especially the context-independence of the subject along with the presentational capacity of the verb that plays a crucial role. This paper sets out to explore the syntactic and semantic qualities of the transitive verb seize. Making use of two large corpora, the proposed case study tries to delimit under what conditions seize tends to operate in one of the two dynamic semantic scales. Model sentences are contrasted in terms of their presentational/qualitative features with special regard to the phenomenon of subject — verb semantic affinity.

This paper proposes an innovative approach to the analysis of fiction texts through the combined means of three points of view, viz. FSP, discourse subjects (DSs) and their cohesive chains, and cohesive ties. It explores the theme of metamorphosis of the characters as it appears in all the three examined aspects, and the influence the metamorphosis exerts on them. Three main problems are discussed in the paper. Firstly, it deals with unexpected tokens in the identity chains of the DSs undergoing the metamorphosis and the cohesive ties through which they are incorporated in these cohesive chains. Secondly, it addresses seeming abrupt switches between two thematic progressions which in fact form just one progression. Lastly, the paper discusses the function of the features detected in the texts in relation to the complexity of the idea of metamorphosis.

The present paper presents the results of a small-scale research aiming at the exploration of the potential of FSP for a text content description. The research task here was to look at how the carriers of the theme and the rheme capture the essence of a text, or in other words, how much they “tell” what the text is about. The results of the FSP analysis were compared to the text content description achieved by the use keywords. The initial hypothesis that a set of theme and rheme carriers captures the content of a text more precisely than a set of keywords was confirmed.

The article addresses the peculiarities of German semantic loans in Ukrainian local dialects of Zakarpattia and their influence on the lexical-semantic system of the latter considering inter-language relations, particularly, semantic interference of languages. The conducted research suggests that this impact leads to internal and structural transformations in a lexical-semantic group or semantic field where particular Ukrainian vernaculars of Zakarpattia belong. The analysis focuses on the significance of these transformations since they concern the word form as well as the meaning and word combinability. The authors aim to explore the distinctive structural-semantic features of German loanwords in Ukrainian vernaculars of Zakarpattia.

Traditionally, phraseology deals with multi-word lexical units. However, mentions of idiomatic compounds and derivatives, i.e. lexical idioms, are far from scarce in linguistic literature even though their only systematic treatment appears to have been presented by Čermák (2007a, b). The present paper attempts to analyse complex words in English to explore the relation between the regular and the idiomatic in word-formation. The study is carried out on a sample of 1000 lexemes from BNC. The sample contains 681 complex lexemes of which 381 are regular and 300 contain one or more anomalies. The results point to an unexpectedly high number of formal anomalies and this leads to the conclusion that non-productivity should not be a criterion of idiomaticity in English due to a high number of relatively systematic, but unproductive structures. Idiomaticity is seen as a scalar value influenced by the degree of opaqueness, discrepancy between word-formation and lexical meaning, and presence of formal or collocational anomaly.

The article deals with the diachronic analysis of double verb participles in Portuguese. The purpose of the work is to analyze the use of two participles of the selected verbs in the evolution of the Portuguese language from the 13th century to the present. The research is based on two linguistic corpora: www.corpusdoportugues.org and CETEMPúblico.
