espanolEste trabajo explora la tension entre el concepto del sufrimiento en el discurso humanista frente a la migracion mantenido durante el mandato de Rafael Correa y la experiencia de los inmigrantes cubanos en Ecuador. A pesar del discurso revolucionario recogido en la Constitucion ecuatoriana, los migrantes cubanos sufren una triple discriminacion: social, economica y legal, en el contexto de las politicas migratorias tanto de Ecuador como de Cuba. El articulo aporta a la literatura sobre la migracion y el sufrimiento y, a la vez, a la emergente literatura sobre la brecha discursiva existente en la liberalizacion de las politicas migratorias de America Latina. EnglishThis paper explores the tension between the concept of suffering as employed in the humanist migration discourse of Rafael Correa and the migratory experience of Cuban immigrants in Ecuador. Despite the former president’s revolutionary discourse, Cuban migrants face triple discrimination: social, economic and legal, in the context of both Ecuadorian and Cuban migration policies. This study contributes to the literature on migration and suffering, as well as the emerging literature on the discursive gaps inherent in Latin American immigration policy liberalization.

espanolEl articulo pone de relieve como el sufrimiento social, concebido como manifestacion de la opresion social y la injusticia incorporada en el individuo, posee atributos que atraviesan las distintas etapas del retorno migratorio, etapas que se encuentran marcadas por procesos transnacionales y multilocales. A tal efecto, el Modelo VIA –compuesto por los ejes analiticos de vulnerabilidad, incertidumbre y asistencia– permite describir, interpretar y analizar el sufrimiento social durante el proceso de retorno desde un analisis multinivel que conecta las percepciones y experiencias de los actores con inequidades estructurales. EnglishThis article highlights how social suffering, conceived of as a manifestation of social oppression and injustice incorporated into the individual, has attributes that are evident in the different stages of the migratory return, which are marked by transnational and multilocal processes. To this end, the VIA Model – composed of the analytical axes of vulnerability,uncertainty and assistance – allows for the description, interpretation and analysis of social suffering during the return process through a multilevel analysis that connects the perceptions and experiences of the actors with structural inequalities.

The purpose of this article is to analyze ideas, definitions and practices linked to the “emergence” of rehabilitation in Argentina in the mid-20th century. Drawing on primary sources, we analyze conceptions about the medical and social problem of rehabilitating the “cripple,” and its presence on the public agenda between 1940 and 1960. Our results show that poliomyelitis epidemics were a significant factor in placing strain on the scope and contents of both social protection for people with disabilities and modernization projects related to rehabilitation, while forming the basis for subsequent developments in this field.

The objective of this article is to describe the therapeutic itineraries for the care and rehabilitation of people with disabilities in Argentina and Chile. As a methodological strategy, we will present secondary data and some of the findings of two independent qualitative studies. The results show that when pursuing healthcare, people with disabilities and their families face situations that are negative for their quality of life, social participation, and self-esteem. In this way, their position of disadvantage and social devaluation is reproduced.
