The 1974 Carnation Revolution set one of the greatest upheavals of LusoAfrican contemporary history in motion. It brought about the end of almost half a century of dictatorship and 500 years of colonial rule, which had become anachronistic and had been opposed by various independence movements since the 1950s. For Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe, 1974 meant the end of a long fight for independence, but also sparked civil war, massacres, displacement and migration. The process of coming to terms with these events is still incomplete. For Portugal, it meant coping with the loss of its empire, being confined to its European territory and accepting its own postcolonial condition.

This article presents an analysis of the documentary film Dundo, Memória Colonial (‘Dundo, colonial memory’) (2009) by the Portuguese journalist Diana Andringa. In the first section, I will inscribe Andringa’s film within the wider context of filmic geographies of return. Sections two and three address the multifaceted ways in which colonial Dundo is remembered in Portugal by former settlers and in Angola by former African workers as presented by the film. The fourth section of the article analyses a more personal memory of Dundo that is also developed in this film as the director herself spent her childhood in Dundo. I will conclude that Dundo offers fragmented visions of the past that have to be confronted and discussed in a shared Afro-Portuguese filmic framework. As nostalgic and critical ways of remembering the past are confronted in the film, the documentary proposes that remembering the past is always ambivalent and connected to specific politics of history. Film cities and film services perspectives have become an important part of policy thinking about film and television production. It is now routine for a variety of governmental and industry agencies to assist in supporting, marketing and developing local capabilities, infrastructures and resources. The aim is usually to extend the local footprint of the film and television industries by attracting foot loose globally dispersed productions. This article revisits and expands earlier perspectives on film cities and film services developed by the author and his collaborators. It does this in order to compare Australian and South African cities' participation in national and global film production and to consider how such approaches may be usefully redisposed for policy thinking and opportunities for South Africa's large informal market settings.
