In recent decades regulation of issues like abortion, euthanasia, same-sex unions, etc, has become in Poland an area of highly emotional political conflicts, deeply dividing democratic society. At the same time, despite significant internal tensions, against the background of most other European countries Poland is an example of a country consistently upholding human life and family based on monogamous marriage. The main aim of the text is a discussion of the role of the Catholic Church in the dynamics of the discourse on primary morality policy in Poland on the example of the debate over the legalization of euthanasia and the debate over the legalization of in vitro procedures.

The 2015 immigration crisis revealed the weak cultural condition Europe finds itself in, given the adoption by a majority of states of a model for development that deliberately severs ties with common civilisational roots. However, while Poles do not really nurture prejudices against either Islam or immigrants, a decided majority of them voiced their unwillingness to accept new (mainly Muslim) arrivals, in the context of a solution to the above crisis the EU was intending to impose. A change of policy was thus forced upon the Union by Poland and other CEECs, given the latter’s strong guiding conviction that pursuit of a multicultural ideology leads to a weakening – rather than any improvement – in the condition of culture in Europe, and hence to a sapping of the continent’s power in the international relations sphere. As the crisis has made clear, the EU will probably have to start taking more account of preferences in this part of Europe. This means opportunities for the political science of religion to research the likelihood of a return to the Christian component of European identity, as well as the role this might play in improving the cultural condition of this part of the world.

The purpose of this paper is to draw a map of the essential points of contact between religion and foreign policy in Poland during 2001-2020. The analytic studies have shown that the relationships between religion and Polish foreign policy could be observed in all the dimensions mentioned by the theoretical approaches, i.e. in the dimension of influence of religious ideas, religious entities and institutions, in the field of presence of religious elements on the agenda of foreign policy, and with reference to religious diplomacy. The impact of religious ideas was limited to the generally interpreted Christianity. Religious entities would strongly prefer to exert their influence from the level of meta-politics than to do this by direct means. Among all the institutions, only the electoral system played a relatively significant role in the introduction of religious components to foreign policy, yet only in the initial period. The presence of religious elements on the agenda of the foreign policy was not permanent and was actually limited to a few initiatives. Similarly, religious diplomacy does not seem to be a methodology that is deeply rooted in Poland’s political culture, and it is not really accepted by the religious entities.

This chapter analyzes how a few Arab countries have conducted successful policies of modernisation in order to promote inter alia the arrival of modern capitalism, or the market economy. The Arab state is typically described as authoritarian, a strong state in a weak society, following Migdal’s concepts. The Islamic world was prepared for the arrival of modern capitalism towards the middle of the nineteenth century, especially the Arab countries. The Arabs put themselves to work, as testified by the birth of modern economic institutions in the nineteenth century. The modernisation literature in Arab countries resulted in a clear message, namely that Islam as a civilisation had enormous problems with modernity. The structural thesis on the contrary searches for the obstacles to hinder the full-scale development of a civil society in the Arab world, arguing that the foundations exist in modern times.
