“Between Wonderland or Utopia: Louisiana Museum of Modern Art as a new museum for the Danish Welfare society” focuses on Louisiana, established in 1958, as a key model for challenging the traditional museum category in postwar Europe. During the first twenty years, Louisiana was leading in creating an experience museum with a new democratic Bildung concept for the rising Welfare society, the text argues. The argument is unfolded in an analysis of the exhibitionary complex and the new experience educative curatorial formats – from the open and inviting architectural decentered structure; myriad participatory practices; new exhibition formats and publications, a children’s museum, and commitment to public engagement through symposiums and concerts. While shifting its focus from Danish and Scandinavian art and design to international modern art, Louisiana with its founding director Knud W. Jensen was devoted to bringing art and culture to the broad audiences and presenting a cultural alternative to the rising consumerism. Louisiana strived to be a cultural asset and relevant to the contemporary society – a museum for developing, shaping and “educating” individuals in the new postwar society.

To Moses Hess, mankind’s history up to the present has only been a “natural history”. This article shows that this – at first sight puzzling – representation is part and parcel of Hess’s critique of mercantile alienation developed in his essay On the Essence of Money. From a historical-philosophical perspective, it aims at demonstrating that mankind’s trajectory so far has been prompted by the progress of domination, whose acme would be mercantile alienation. Secondly, from the standpoint of social ontology, such a negative conception of history is rooted in naturalist prejudice. As any society can be conceived of as a way of socializing human nature, the shopkeepers’ society must be criticized for it prevents the free development of our natural abilities and, first and foremost, of our abilities to cooperate. Finally, from a political viewpoint, there ensues that socialism, as the freely chosen and conscious organisation of cooperation, represents the (at last discovered) historical answer to the question raised by nature in us: how to live up to the abilities that the history of life has bequeathed on us?
