Young hegelianism has been the crux of conceptual creations. Among the concepts showcased by this school of thought, one, developed by Moses Hess and Karl Marx, was Zusammenwirken: “acting together”. For both thinkers, this concept, together with those of reciprocal action and activity exchange, was a tool to think social action and society itself. This essay aims at figuring out how specific Hess’s conception of “acting together” was. It purports to define this concept by taking into consideration that Hess used it in a two-fold enterprise: developing both a philosophy of history and a representation of the present as the locus of a potential shift from a middleman-and-mediator-based “acting together” to a consciously and self-organized one.

This essay underscores the relevance of young Hegelianism by analyzing the reception of the Hegelian system by its contemporaries. Starting from the example of the concept of recognition, it seeks to explain why this concept, which is held today for one of Hegel’s foremost theoretical contributions, went unnoticed or was not deemed worthy of interest among authors who yet knew that system well. The article first surveys the meanings of the term Anerkennung in Hegel’s and the young Hegelians’ time with reference to Adelung’s and to the Grimm brothers’ dictionaries. In two further developments, it explores the uses of the term Anerkennung in Feurbach’s and Bruno Bauer’s works.

For almost half a century, Martin Buber collected, translated and edited Hasidic stories. This impressive body of work contributed to the knowledge and recognition of Hasidism in European culture. The revelation of this rich literary heritage played an important cultural and political role in the Renaissance of the Jewish culture in the 20th century. Buber was equally criticised for his romantic, aestheticised and idealised view of Hasidism. Buber rewrote the Hasidic stories by transforming them into Volksmärchen similar to German popular literature. He also tends to extract them from their original linguistic and religious context, omitting their Kabbalistic dimension, as in the stories of the Baal Shem Tov and Nahman of Bratslav

The opposition between these two fundamental categories of theatre aesthetics is based on Aristotle, who gives primacy to Hedone, and on Friedrich Schiller, who proposes an idealistic synthesis of the two. During his Scandinavian exile, Brecht addressed this dilemma in his essay Vergnügungstheater oder Lehrtheater? (1935/1936) and later in his very Aristotelian Prologue to Kleines Organon für das Theater (1949). His view of social reality as influenced by the process of consciousness affecting the role of the audience lends a new basis to this relationship, which changes with the historical situation. “Shifts of emphasis” (Akzentverschiebungen) on the one hand, and a ridge line on the other: These are the attempts to do justice to what the Diary (28 December 1952) defines as the means of education and the end of art.

The article explores the technoscientific ambitions of an overlooked movement within Swedish history at the end of the Great Northern War. This movement, which the author calls “new boreal science”, roughly lasted from 1710 to 1720. The article explores its semantics, networks, goals and pioneers, and contextualises it within broader discourses on the North during the period 1620-1720. In this way, the article shows how the development of Swedish practical science became inseparable from a rich set of neo-Latin discourses on the North, supported by gothicist-rudbeckian historiography. Both wished to challenge long-lasting narratives about Scandinavia as an uncivilized, barbaric periphery, in favour of a bold revisionist narrative which placed Sweden at the centre of Western civilization. The article provides an overview of these discourses and shows how they pictured the North as a new abode for knowledge brought by the “Boreal Muses”. More broadly, the article highlights the interdependance of discourses on the North and Swedish science during the Age of Great Power. It also sheds light on overlooked scientific ambitions at the end of the Swedish Empire, and expands current understandings about early modern forms of borealism.
