The study of narrative resources such as free indirect discourse and narrated monologue, in Los de abajo, although it has been clearly pointed out by critics such as Mansour, Escalante and St. Ours, is scarce in comparison with the works on the Mexican Revolution and the controversy over the ideological position of its author, Mariano Azuela. In the present work, an approach to these resources is made, following the precepts of narratology, starting from the relationship between the narrative voice and the figural discourse, and between the discourses of the characters; that is, from the citation processes. Specifically, an approach is made to the way in which Demetrio Macías recounts his exploits by repeating the speech of Alberto Solís, shaped, in turn, by other anonymous speeches. The relevance of self-narrating in this way is such that it implies a radical change in the personality and destiny of Demetrio Macías.

This article deals with establishing the two generic aspects that determine the texts of Ensayos y poemas, published by Julio Torri in 1917. The article includes the review of the author’s testimonies in the establishment of his selected genre. It proposes a series of characteristics that allow us to analyze the essays and prose poems that make up this volume. From this characterization, it is contrasted with the features of the so-called micro-fiction or sudden fiction, an emerging genre that, in the concern to fix a tradition and a series of textual models, has established this work as inaugural.

Without losing sight of the socio-historic backdrop, this article examines the disillusion suffered by the main characters in El Zarco by Manuel Altamirano, Los de abajo by Mariano Azuela, and Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo. Their arduous awakening to reality drives the narrative, and the way by which they face their true situations reveals the spiritual bearing that enlivens them and which could very well be an echo of the disillusion the authors felt in view of the realities that inspired their works. The ontology proposed by Martin Heidegger in Being and Time serves to consider the characterization of the three novels’ protagonists. Besides revealing these works’ existential vein, this approach invites a consideration of their authors’ philosophical stance.

Within the framework of a broader investigation —“Conquest and cruelty”— which addresses some chronicles of the Conquest as propitious materials to document, from an “aesthetic” point of view, the living matter of genocide, this essay constructs a vision of what Fray Bartolomé de las Casas, in his Breve relación de la destrucción de las Indias, called “exquisite ways of cruelty.” And all that, starting with the detailed analysis of an article by Ramón Menéndez Pidal —“An abnormal norm of Father Las Casas”—, its psychiatric ramifications and some unexpectedly surrealist connections, from Jacques Lacan and Minotaure magazine to the “critical paranoia” of Salvador Dalí.
