Juan Jose de Eguiara y Eguren (1696-1763) seems to have been clearly devoted to St. Joseph. In order to show this, the following pages will take a look at his T ratado sobre el Santisimo Jose, Esposo de la Madre de Dios (which includes two interesting paratexts by his friend, the Jesuit Vicente Lopez), published in volume 1 of Selectae Dissertationes Mexicanae… , a complete treatise on Theology written for his students at the Mexican University. Eguiara´s debts to previous European and Spanish scholarly tradition on Saint Joseph will be pointed out, as well as his personal contributions to this tradition. Finally, a bibliographical review of this New Spain bibliographer and theologian’s homiletic production on Saint Joseph will be made, as well as of the books on Saint Joseph that were printed at his own printing house (Imprenta de la Bibliotheca Mexicana) during Eguiara´s lifetime. Finally, among Eguiara´s works dedicated to Saint Joseph, a manuscript anthology of sermons on the saint written by different European authors is pointed out, and the possibility is suggested that this work may be the one of similar characteristics that has been attributed to Vicente Lopez and which is now considered lost.

This article deals with establishing the two generic aspects that determine the texts of Ensayos y poemas , published by Julio Torri in 1917. The article includes the review of the author’s testimonies in the establishment of his selected genre. It proposes a series of characteristics that allow us to analyze the essays and prose poems that make up this volume. From this characterization, it is contrasted with the features of the so-called micro-fiction or sudden fiction, an emerging genre that, in the concern to fix a tradition and a series of textual models, has established this work as inaugural.

Literary critics have paid little attention to the textual history of Guillermo Prieto’s “Musa callejera”. When spoken of, his work is thought of as monolithic, whose only antecedent was Filomeno Mata’s 1883 edition, legitimized by the 1971 reprint that Francisco Monterde made for Porrua publishing house. However, the structure of its textual history reveals three main facts which may modify the vision of Guillermo Prieto’s works: on one hand, that his very first book of poems, Versos ineditos , which completely propounds its own poetics, has been hidden in the author’s work; on the other hand, that Filomeno Mata’s “Musa callejera” is actually an anthology of Prieto’s poems, and finally, that “Musa callejera” is a literary project that the author continued until a few years before his death.

In this article we take a general look at four Mexican authors who have tackled the subject of animal sacrifice: Ramon Rubin, Juan Jose Arreola, Hector Aguilar Camin and Alberto Chimal. Our broad approach is that one way or the other harmful and disadvantageous situations are expressed for the non-human entity, considering the social implications of the role which has been assigned to it across time, be it in the symbolic act or in today’s production logic. Departing from such Derridean considerations about the existing relationship between humans and fauna, it is evident that in the works of the authors analyzed, the topic or use of animals presents the material reach of their sacrifice, especially when the matter of the literary representation of pain or physical suffering comes into play. It is relevant at the same time to affirm that in this work we consider the reflections of several authors who, from a philosophic or anthropologic perspective, have delved into the fundamental aspects of the sacrificial act, pointing out the evocative role of the animal, rightly conceived as an important cultural event, wherein are manifested transcendental ceremonies (Rene Girard) or the rites of passage which strengthen the group’s ties (Clifford Geertz).
