This article focuses on Aragonese courtier Hugo de Urries's public profile by means of analyzing the critical points derived from examining his personal, political, cultural and historical stands making use of an invaluable primary source, his letter to Fernando the Catholic in the early 1490s. It is not often that the medieval scholar is presented with the chance to analyze a self-evident symbiosis between the public and private personae of a late medieval knight. As part of Urries's public profile, his translation of Valerius Maximus and his foreword to King Fernando of Aragon are contextualized as an integral part of an agenda of legitimization of royal and imperial power, an agenda in which Urries actively participated and one that he militantly promoted throughout his life. This article juxtaposes diplomacy, courtliness and translation of classics as a means of showcasing some of the markers of nation building in the years of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs.

The aims of this study are theoretical and comparative. It contains a theoretical section describing the 18 and 19 centuries visions of the Middle Ages (admirable, critical and indifferent). Then, the relationships with the European romantics, including the Catalans, are studied. The folkloric and nationalism are presented as bridges between the two epochs. The history of the 17 and 18 centuries Picturesque is reviewed and a new view of it is presented. Instead of conceiving it as a minor aesthetic, I propose it as a precedent for the avant-garde given its defence of the irregular and the badly done. Furthermore, the 19 century idea of paradise lost was conceptualised around four axes (past, infancy, nature and art) and I propose a fifth (ethnicity) for the 21 century.

this article is a reflexion on the achievements of field system archaeology in medieval spanish archaeology. it goes throught the recent orientations in agrarian history and the limited involvement of archaeologists in this subject matter until recently. only the so-called ‘hydraulic archaeology’, developed for the study of the irrigated areas of al-Andalus, which has some application in feudal hydraulic systems, and the research undertaken in the mountain fieldsystems of Asturias stand out as archaeological approaches before the end of the 20th century. more recently, several archaeologists have begun to develop new methodologies for the study of medieval farmlands, most notably among which are the application of archaeological excavation techniques, radiocarbon dating, and microgeomorphological analysis of the actual forming areas. in this way hydraulic archaeology is applied to the study of the impact of the feudal conquest upon the agrarian landscape of al-Andalus. finally, this article reflects on the necessity of satisfactorily combining the resources provided by archaeology and textual records in research.
