Abstract:The Dangme Bible translation of Matthew 6:12 renders the Greek ("forgive") as ke pa ("lend"). The word "lend" does not match with the word "sin" in the Dangme text. Using the mother-tongue biblical hermeneutics methodology, this article seeks to determine how "forgive" should be translated in Dangme to make sense to Dangme Bible readers. The finding is that Matthew 6:12 should be translated as NgϽϽ wa tϽmi Ͻmε kε ke wϽ kaa bϽ nε waa kε kee nihi nε tϽϽ wa nϽ ("Let go of our sins just as we let go of the sins of those who wrong us"). The ke ("let go of") in this translation agrees with the rendering in some other Ghanaian translations, such as the Dangme New Testament (1977), the New Ga Bible (2006), the Ewe Bible ([1931] 2010) and the Asante-Twi Bible ([1964] 2012). This finding confirms the interpretation of 88.8 percent of Dangme Bible readers, who interpret God's forgiveness as God cancelling the sins of the offender. The finding of the study has thus added to the varied translations and interpretations of Matthew 6:12.

Abstract:In Matthew 25:31–46, Jesus describes the final judgment of humankind in apocalyptic terms, and as in other apocalyptic texts the righteous are rewarded and the wicked are punished. Yet in Matthew's final judgment both the righteous and the wicked are surprised at their status and completely unaware of the criteria for judgment. Although "surprise" is usually noted with regard to the timing of the eschaton, it is an element that has otherwise been neglected in studies of apocalyptic. Are the wicked always unaware of their misdeeds? Are the righteous not usually self-righteous? Comparison with The Book of the Watchers (1 Enoch 1–36) demonstrates that for Enoch the Watchers know they did wrong, but they are nonetheless disappointed that Enoch cannot intervene to help them before God. Matthew plays much more on the idea of complete surprise in paradoxically encouraging his community to do good without realising it.

Abstract:Paul's references to women in his letter to the Romans and their probable backdrop against the situation in Rome and Paul's own circumstances in the mid-fifties of the first century CE have rarely been examined. This article first addresses some of the methodological challenges involved in this quest and sketches the historical background. Discussion also includes Tacitus's account of a particularly unsettling event in Annales 11.12–38 and its conceivable bearing on Romans. It then discusses Paul's references to some women, to women in general, to named individual women and to female characteristics or activities in Romans 1:26, 4:19, 7:2–3, 8:22, 9:9–12, 16:1–2 and 16:3–15. While women occur in unqualified traditional roles in marriage, family and society when Paul makes general and abstract references in some passages, Paul also mentions women who fulfil new roles in specific and concrete references, where he wholeheartedly praises them.

Abstract:In this study, the ethics of the Letter to Philemon is investigated by means of an integrated model for interpreting the ethics of the New Testament (called an Organon) that was developed by Ruben Zimmermann. Five issues are addressed, namely (1) how moral significance is created in the letter; (2) which norms appear in the letter; (3) where these norms come from; (4) if a hierarchy of norms can be discerned in the letter; and (5) how the ethics of the letter can be appropriated for our current context(s). It is argued that in this letter moral significance is generated by means of an integrated "web of norms" consisting of norms such as "spiritual kinship" and "divine will," and that this may be appropriated in a meaningful way for our times by means of a compliant reading, balanced by a resistant reading.

Abstract:The profuse use of the Bible perceived as the Word of God and the deposit of faith is common to all Christian denominations in Nigeria. Its contextual interpretation assumes various forms that can be formal, informal or neither of the two. Each has its expected impact in theological discussions and practice of the faith. Formal interpretation by experts, well-informed in scientific tools, contributes much in shaping the orthodoxy and orthopraxy of the Christian faith. Conversely, distorted explanations of the Bible have repercussions, as is evident from the mushrooming of sects and syncretism. The focus of this article is to explore some varieties of interpretation of sacred Scripture in Nigeria, their impact, and to offer suggestions on how to achieve an enhanced interpretation that will lead to a deepened understanding of the faith and its practice. Spurred on by the centrality of the Word of God in the life of Christians, the article, hopefully, will attain its aim of accentuating the need for a correct interpretation of the Bible.
