Purpose. This paper aimed to shed light on the phenomenon of heroism among nurses by conducting semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of nurses of a well-known hospital in Jordan in January and February 2021 who stood up against the COVID-19 virus pandemic. Those nurses were exposed to the risk of being infected and possible death in a critical and uncertain situation. Design. The study described the lived experiences of those nurses, identified the meanings of those experiences, and clustered those meanings in themes guided by the descriptive phenomenological view of Husserl and using the descriptive phenomenological analysis method of Colaizzi. Findings. The study highlighted several elements related to heroism derived from nurses’ experiences, i.e., the hero understands the risky situation, has the desire to help others, is confident, faces stressors, benefits from the existing supporting system, copes positively, and ends up with positive outcomes. At last, the study proposed a model for heroism. Value of results. The study opens the door for understanding the phenomenon of heroism basedon the nurse’s lived experiences and its impact on individuals and organizational performance. The study recommended teaching heroism to people and preparing them for risky situations as a strategy for business continuity during crises. Also, the authors encourage scholars to conduct further qualitative and quantitative research about heroism in other contexts considering cultural differences, various work environments, and crisis types.

Purpose. The mediating roles of tolerance to workplace incivility between ethical leadership and intention to sabotage was investigated in Jordan. The study relied on social learning theory (Bandura, 1977; 1986), reinforcement theory (Skinner, 1938), and conservation of resource theory (Hobfoll, 1988). Methodology. A quantitative method with survey questionnaires were distributed to 376 employees in different universities, public and private, in northern Jordan to obtain data. The following variables were part of the self-administered survey developed for the purposes of this study: “ethicalleadership” (10-item scale); “tolerance to workplace incivility” (8-item scale); “the intention to sabotage” (8-item scale). Data were analyzed with SPSS and structural equation modeling with AMOS. Findings. A significant and direct negative relationship was found between ethical leadership and employees’ intention to sabotage in Jordan. Also, a significant and direct positive effect was found between tolerance to workplace incivility and employees’ intention to sabotage, which indicates that tolerance to incivility increases intention to sabotage in Jordan. Further, it was found that tolerance to workplace incivility partially mediates the relationship between ethical leadership and employees’ intention to sabotage in Jordan. Value of results. This paper improves the understanding of workplaces in Jordanian universities and facilitates the creation of healthier work environments. The findings also contribute to several fields of organizational research, such as: human resources management, organizational development, and organizational behavior. The findings have many theoretical and practical implications, which were discussed.

Introduction. This study provides new insights into the impact of career satisfaction on performance through a multi-dimensionality approach, and a mediator variable. Objective. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between career satisfaction, personal growth initiative, task performance, and contextual performance. Method. The research was designed with a quantitative and correlational method. Data were collected from 213 public and private sector employees workingin different cities and occupational groups in Turkey. Hypotheses of the research were tested by bootstrapping regression analysis performed with 5000 derivative samples. Results. Career satisfaction contributes positively to explaining personal growth initiative, task performance, and contextual performance. Besides, the personal growth initiative makes a positive contribution to explaining task performance and contextual performance. In addition, the most important finding of the study is that personal growth initiative positively mediates the effect of career satisfaction on task performance andcontextual performance. Another original output of the study is the adaptation of task performance and contextual performance scales used in the research into Turkish. Conclusion. In order to fulfill the requirements of the changing business life, employees must first be aware of their own needs, give importance to their personal development to meet these needs, and be on a career path where they willfeel satisfied. On the other hand, managers should implement various approaches that will understand their employees’ career and personal development expectations.
