Abstract This article examines the racial dimensions of UFO abduction narratives by comparing the structural elements of these narratives with historical accounts of African enslavement. It is suggested that UFO abduction narratives from White Americans, which make up an overwhelming majority of such accounts, comes from collective feelings of widespread culpability for the enslavement and profiting from African persons. It is suggested that the UFO abduction experience is a way to overcome such pervasive feelings of guilt by establishing a new power dynamic that reverses the roles of victim and victimizer and mirrors closely historical accounts of abduction. Furthermore, it seeks to add to the discourse surrounding race and the conception of the extraterrestrial.

Abstract The study focuses on plot motifs in ancient Indian narratives. It seeks to clarify the fundamental principles and world structure depicted in them, with a special emphasis on the value axis “life superficit – life deficit”. In some respects, it differs radically from the Euro-American model, as implied by comparable literary works of Western provenance. The comparative analysis will not deal with generic, but only typological connections. The paper also considers the fact that there are no direct genealogical equivalences between the compared narratives.

Abstract Greetings are linguistic and cultural universals. Every language and culture has a set of formulas or social and ritual acts practiced as greetings. Although cultural practices of greeting to achieve particular social goals may vary, the act of greeting, the paradigm itself, can be examined under two communicative functions. (1) trust/safety providing and (2) the power manipulation. This study examines greetings in Turkish folk tales and figures out their socio-pragmatic dynamics based on politeness theory and speech act theory.

Abstrait Le Lai de Tydorel (fin du XIIe siècle) porte des traces importantes d’éléments folkloriques, que l’on peut identifier à la lumière des répertoires de motifs narratifs de Thompson et de Guerreau-Jalabert. Nous lisons ici le texte en ce sens, en repérant deux motifs principaux, qui en fournissent le schéma général, ainsi que deux motifs de moindre envergure, mais tout aussi importants dans l’économie du texte.

Zusammenfassung Der Beitrag widmet sich einem allegorischen Märchen vom Zarewitsch Chlor, das Katharina II. für ihr Enkelkind schrieb. Diese Kuriosität der Literaturgeschichte gilt nicht nur als das erste Kinderbuch überhaupt, das aus dem Russischen in andere Sprachen übersetzt wurde, sondern auch als das erste Kunstmärchen einer deutschsprachigen Autorin. Neben den märchentypischen Motiven und der Selbstinszenierung von Katharina II. rückt die europaweite Rezeption des Märchens in den Fokus.

Résumé Cet article analysera la fusion d’éléments folkloriques, mythologiques, merveilleux et fantastiques ainsi que l’utilisation de diverses opérations transfictionnelles (un retelling du conte La Belle et la Bête) dans le conte Un grain de vérité d’Andrzej Sapkowski, à partir de la théorie littéraire des mondes possibles de M.-L. Ryan. Celle-ci nous semble appropriée pour rendre compte de la diversité des littératures de l’imaginaire et de la complexité de la notion générique de fantasy. Cette étude nous permettra de mieux situer l’œuvre dans ses concepts, son genre, ses procédures et ainsi de mieux saisir sa spécificité et son intérêt.

Zusammenfassung Die Darstellung des Werwolfs in norddeutschen Sagen basiert auf den größtenteils handschriftlichen Zetteln aus der Sammlung von Richard Wossidlo. Die in dem Zettelkasten „Werwolf“ versammelten Sagen spiegeln vor allem soziale Strukturen der ländlichen Gesellschaft des achtzehnten und neunzehnten Jahrhunderts in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern wider. Es geht insbesondere um das konfliktreiche Verhältnis von Gutsbesitzern und Bediensteten, aber auch um die Verwandlung von sozialen Außenseitern in einen Werwolf. Neben der sozialen Komponente kommen bei der Selbst- und Fremdverwandlung in die Wolfsgestalt Elemente des Volksglaubens und Zaubermittel zum Tragen.

Zusammenfassung Als Erbin des achtzehnten und neunzehnten Jahrhunderts, als ‚Volkspoesie‘ der höheren Literatur zur Seite gestellt wurde, liegt das Augenmerk der Erzählforschung bis heute eher auf längeren Gattungen. Weniger Aufmerksamkeit dagegen kam und kommt den Klein- und Kleinstgattungen zu. Der Aufsatz plädiert für eine stärkere Beachtung dieser kleinen und weithin vernachlässigten Formen – einem vergnüglichen Biotop, dem hier durch zahlreiche Beispiele Reverenz erwiesen wird und dem viele wichtige Funktionen zu eigen sind.
