Recent prosodic research has shown that discourse particles such as hm or ah offer an optimal basis for exploring the functions of prosody in general. This study set out to answer four questions: are there prosodic universals in discourse particles, and if so, how many are there and which forms and functions do they have? These questions were analyzed using production and perception data of speakers from five different and non-related language families. The study consists of two parts. The first part aimed to gather spoken data and in doing so, create inventories of discourse particles from five different language families and then comparatively analyze the phonetic forms and phonological functions. The second part aimed to validate the functional categories, to which the units from the first part were allocated. Therefore, listeners’ statements on the functions from the first part were used to have naive speakers reproduce the phonetic forms.

As one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, German is not in any way a uniform form of communication. The present contribution will deal with German in Silesia particularly the German spoken in the Upper Silesian language island (Sprachinsel) of Kostenthal (Gościecin). Following an introduction to the historical development of this language island, I will present several particularities of this German variety. The idiosyncrasies of the base dialect of Kostenthal that are reflected in the predominant German Umgangssprache spoken locally today will then be shown.

This paper investigates synchronic and diachronic complexity in the nominal inflection of 17 isolated and non-isolated Alemannic varieties. Synchronic complexity is the degree of complexity a variety is comprised of at a specific time, thus, the result of the loss, maintenance and growth of complexity in a variety. Diachronic complexity refers to complexification and simplification (i. e. change in complexity), meaning innovations which lead to higher or lower complexity. The paper tests whether an interrelation between synchronic complexity and isolated/non-isolated language communities can be observed, and whether there is an interrelation between complexification and simplification respectively and isolated/non-isolated language communities. The method to measure synchronic complexity is based on Paradigm Function Morphology (Stump 2001 and Ackerman / Stump 2004). The degree of complexification/simplification is determined by the number of innovations leading to higher/lower complexity. Firstly, it is shown that no clear correlation between synchronic complexity and isolation can be observed. Secondly, non-isolated dialects are affected to a greater extent by simplification as well as complexification (i. e. by language change) than isolated dialects.

When collecting linguistic data using translation tasks, stimuli can be presented in written or in oral form. In doing so, there is a possibility that a systematic source of error can occur that can be traced back to the selected survey method and which can influence the results of the translation tasks. This contribution investigates whether and to what extent both of the aforementioned survey methods result in divergent results when using translation tasks. For this investigation, 128 informants provided linguistic data; each informant had to translate 25 Wenker sentences from Standard German into either East Swabian, Lechrain or West Central Bavarian dialect, as the case may be. The results show two tendencies. First, written stimuli lead to a slightly higher number of dialectal translation in segmental variables. Second, when oral stimuli are used, syntactic and lexical variables are translated significantly more often in such a manner that they diverge from the template. The results can be explained in terms of varying cognitive processing operations and the constraints of human working memory. When collecting data in the future, these tendencies should be taken into account.
