“La lettera, conversazione con un assente, rappresenta un evento capitale della solitudine”, scriveva Emil Cioran, scorgendo la supremazia della parola reale, “vissuta”, della lettera su quella “affettata” dell’opera: “cercate la verità su un autore nella sua corrispondenza, piuttosto che nella sua opera. L’opera è perlopiù una maschera [...]. In fondo i libri sono accidenti, le lettere eventi: donde la loro sovranità.” (Cioran, 2007, p. 107). Attraverso la corrispondenza ci si rivela il ritratto dell’uomo quale egli è: con i suoi vizi e virtù, le sue intenzioni, aspirazioni, soddisfazioni, frustrazioni, angosce e paure, soprattutto quando si tratta di lettere indirizzate alle persone più care. Tuttavia, ricostruire un ritratto ‘credibile’ in base alla corrispondenza è un compito arduo. : The aim of the paper is to analyse, using the structuralist approach, the structure of the male characters in L’arte della gioia by Goliarda Sapienza and the meaning—universal or local, symbolic or real—attributed by the writer to them, through the example of six male figures. This approach allows us to delve into the literary text, leaving the biographical, historical, and ideological context outside of the analysis, focusing on internal dynamics that are purely literary. Modesta’s father and her husband, as universal figures of a patriarchal system, illustrate and symbolise the subversion of its laws by Modesta. Modesta’s lovers, Carmino and Carlo, are models of real accomplishments of important male roles (father, husband, lover) whose representation is limited by geopolitical stereotypes. Pietro, Modesta’s loyal gabellotto , embodies local, Sicilian relationships and, as a result, he symbolises the persistence of archaic laws of Sicilian society. With Prando, Modesta’s son, Sapienza realistically illustrates the passage from adolescence to masculinity by showing some universal rules that occur in this transition. The structure of the male characters turns out to be geometric and very clear and is proof of the writer’s great literary awareness and writing skills.

: This article is intended to constitute a first approach towards a critical, comparative, and bibliographic study of the forgotten figure of Catania-born Mario Rapisardi (1844–1912), “the Etnean poet.” A poet and polemicist, he expressed himself in the climate of Positivism during and after Italian Unification, distinguishing himself with an ethical temper that did not make him abandon the Promethean tension towards ideals. Due to these ideals, the poet came into conflict with both the academic and ecclesiastical worlds, resulting in his consequent literary isolation—but not social and human isolation, clearly demonstrated by the fact that more than 100,000 people would attend his funeral.This article is also an invitation to rediscover and translate Rapisardi’s work into Polish, as his presence is almost non-existent, given that only four short poems are translated into Polish: three published in 1921 ( Disinganno , La montagna fatale , Dinanzi a un ritratto ) and one in 1931 ( Nox ). The translations are by Jadwiga Lipińska, Józef Puzyna, Julian Ejsmond, and Julia Dickstein-Wieleżyńska, respectively.The article chronologically traces the Polish criticism of Rapisardi, starting from 1880 with two articles by Polish writers and literary critics Waleria Marrené-Morzkowska and Julian Adolf Święcicki, up to the present times, and is based both on studies by famous literary scholars, such as Maurycy Mann, and on articles that appeared in literary magazines, such as Przegląd Humanistyczny and Przegląd Współczesny .

The article presents the results of research on linguistic reduplication in Vigatese, the literary language invented by writer Andrea Camilleri. This is an aspect of Camilleri’s storytelling that is often noted by scholars but that has not yet received a dedicated study. The research is conducted on the corpus of 101 texts starring Salvo Montalbano—composed of 29 novels and 72 short stories published between 1994 and 2020—within which about 300 different reduplication forms and more than 2,200 total occurrences have been recorded. Here, the data on the expressive reduplication with adjectives are given: 64 forms with 379 total occurrences analysed for different literary scales, at sentence level and paragraph level. The collocations within the corpus, the possible spelling variations, and whether the use is in mimesis or diegesis are restored. The methodological approach is of a mixed-methods nature: a digitally assisted text analysis (DATA) following the concept of scalable reading (Mueller, 2014) follows the traditional close-reading analysis. A second analysis of the data on the diegetic and mimetic axis was carried out. The results obtained were then used for a data-driven comparison conducted on the corpus of all of Giovanni Verga’s narrative works. These initial results show that three out of every four reduplications are a diegetic recurrence. Despite the extensive use of mimesis in the texts, the true orality of Camillerian storytelling seems to reside elsewhere. This research is part of a broader study of all narrative texts under the general hypothesis that the formal equivalents of the writer’s popularity are to be found in the repetitiveness that was originally, and perhaps too hastily, criticised.
