Mobile computing user sometimes feel the inconvenience that wireless data telecommunication is unstable and restricted to a narrow-band width. We have developed a middleware for wireless networks that compensates continuous data streams and reconnects automatically. We have confirmed the effectiveness of the middleware for continuous data compensation.

The OpenCable set-top terminal will serve as the gateway to the cable network's programs and services, including support for digital SDTV and HDTV on cable. The OpenCable set-top initiative has selected the versatile IEEE 1394 high-performance serial bus as the bridge between the diversity of applications delivered to the cable set-top and consumer electronic devices such as television receivers. The set of requirements for the set-top to digital television (DTV) interface are described. The implementation of these requirements embodied in the OpenCable interface design are presented.

In the reproduction of digitized sound, a method providing a more virtual and realistic environment is proposed by utilizing the ultrasonic component produced with sampling. Hearing tests show that this method is effective.

The MPEG-4 visual texture coding (VTC) is a wavelet-based image coder that was created in the context of synthetic and natural hybrid coding (SNHC) to support applications that demand high-quality, efficient, and scalable textures. This paper provides an overview of various MPEG-4 VTC techniques and the functionalities supported by these techniques.

This paper presents software implementations of three display processing algorithms on a VLIW multimedia processor core. A combination of algorithm simplifications and software optimizations resulted in a real-time implementation for standard-definition video without compromising picture quality. Experimental results for deinterlacing, sharpness and color control algorithms are shown.

A so called hologram is a fully autostereoscopic 3D color display offering up to 128 depth level in front of and behind the display screen itself. These new display features will be achieved by an arrangement of lenticular glasses, color and brightness filters and a binary liquid crystal display being writable by laser beams and being erasable by electrical fields. The LC-layer can be substituted by a cheap image-coded black/white film showing a 3D-photo. A first model of a 20/spl times/16 inch 3D colour picture is presented.

In this paper we describe the implementation of MPEG4/H.263 real-time video decoding on the high performance fixed-point DSP. This series of DSP utilize a common core based on VelociTI/sup TM/, the advanced very long instruction word (VLIW) DSP architecture, which makes them ideal for the high performance embedded multimedia applications. On the EVM board of this kind of DSP (CPU frequency 160 MHz) we were able to demonstrate decoding of MPEG-4/H.263 bitstream coded at 700 Kbps, CIF (352/spl times/288), at a speed of 55/65 fps, respectively. Applications such as consumer set-top boxes that decode streaming video on the Internet and packet-based videophones will benefit from this performance.

Although there are technical issues in data broadcasting, much larger challenges lie in the development of successful business models. The conversion to digital television will create huge opportunities, but work needs to be done on enabling appropriate business models.
