A highly integrated second generation HDTV IC that supports MPEG-2, ATSC, BS4, and other standards is presented. It performs transport stream demultiplexing, video decoding, down conversion for 480I/P displays, display processing and 2D graphics. A full resolution output is provided for HDTV displays.

We propose a new image watermarking method for copyright protection. This method is a block based approach in the spatial domain. In addition to the perceptual invisibility and robustness, the image quality is also considered during the embedding procedure. Block activity is calculated to embed watermark. The watermark strength and the spread of the signal into a block are controlled by the block activity measurement. Experimental results show that the proposed method is suitable for the high quality image.

Register exchange (RE) and traceback (TB) are the two known memory organization methods used by a Viterbi decoder. This paper describes a new traceback technique that utilizes a novel forward tracing algorithm, which can greatly cut down the latency at minimal hardware cost. The new technique is compared with the conventional traceback algorithm. As an example, the architecture design implementing this new traceback technique for a Grand Alliance HDTV Viterbi decoder is described. System level simulation verified the new traceback technique.

This paper presents the results of the definition and prototyping of a terrestrial interactive system based on the DVB-T (digital video broadcasting terrestrial) standard for the broadcast channel (downstream) and the novel synchronous frequency division multiple access (SFDMA) technique for the return channel (upstream). The system has been conceived and implemented in the framework of the European ACTS iTTi project. The approach is to transmit bursts of low bit rate data from domestic DVB-T receivers back to the broadcaster within the UHF band. System specification, complete hardware prototyping and complexity estimation in view of VLSI implementation of the receiver has been carried out within the project.
