Development of a prototype residential gateway based on low-cost off-the-shelf PC components is described. The goal is to show how such a gateway might operate to satisfy the requirements of a broad spectrum of customer requirements, from basic remote metering to full multimedia services. It features network enabled BIOS extensions or OS kernel extensions, which allow most of the gateway operating system modules and services to be loaded remotely from a head-server over a network link.

The MAP VLIW processor architecture provides an integrated programmable solution for set-top box (STB) terminal manufacturers-enabling multiple media applications (e.g. MPEG2 decode of one channel, digital PIP on another) to operate simultaneously on one chip. Alternately one can operate a single high quality application, like down decoding of high-definition television (HDTV) to standard television (STV). STB designers can program these applications using their proprietary algorithms in a high-level language, enabling easy product differentiation (such as cost vs. features, picture/sound quality, etc.) in a market segment full of several fixed-function solutions. New applications or upgrades can be downloaded to the STB. We describe how typical STB applications are mapped to the MAP parallel processing architecture.

This paper presents a very high-speed digital subscriber line (VDSL) solution called synchronized discrete multi-tone (SDMT), which is a flexible, low-complexity time-division duplexed implementation of DMT that provides key desirable VDSL features. The measured performance results quantify the achievable ranges and data rates of a currently-available SDMT VDSL system.

Base station antenna arrays are a promising method for providing significant capacity increases for third generation cellular mobile radio systems. This paper presents a space-time receiver structure and evaluates a range of direction-of-arrival (DOA) algorithms, to assess the potential capacity gains from the employment of multiple receiver antennas for wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA).

We have developed techniques to reproduce DVD-RAM discs at DVD-ROM drives. The key techniques are reduction of feedthrough in the focusing error signal, reduction of the push-pull signal offset and the half tracking jump function.

We present a watermarking scheme for digital videos that are based on human visual system characteristics. Our watermarking scheme inserts perceptually invisible watermark in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain. We have shown that the proposed scheme provides better results than two other popular schemes both in transparency and robustness.
