The soft-output Viterbi (see IEEE J. Sel. Areas in Comm., vol.16, p.260-4, 1998) algorithm (SOVA) and the log-maximum a posterior probability (log-MAP) algorithm are commonly used in turbo decoding. We propose to modify the sliding window MAP-algorithm of Viterbi to reduce the computational delay even further. We compare the simulation performance of this low latency log-MAP algorithm with the sliding window log-MAP. We also estimate the VLSI implementation complexities of the SOVA, the log-MAP and the proposed low latency log-MAP.

We have developed a 1394 long-haul adapter that extends the distance between equipment up to 500 m while maintaining interoperability with existing 1394 devices. The adapter can be applied to the 1394-based home network and local area network.

The deep UV mastering process of the next generation high-density disk is demonstrated using an all-solid-state CW 266 nm laser for the first time. We achieved a density of over 14 Gbit/in/sup 2/ with acceptable jitter using both novolak type resist and chemically amplified resist.

Digital television (DTV) is currently being implemented in the United States (U.S.), with special emphasis on high definition television (HDTV). The Advanced Television System Committee (ATSC) standard has been selected as the new DTV standard in the U.S., which is based on the digital vestigial side band (VSB) transmission system. A brief overview of the digital VSB transmission system field-test performance from several U.S. cities is covered. VSB receiver design parameters are discussed as a result of the field tests performed by early adopter DTV broadcasters.

The DOCSIS standard has provided a basis for the cablemodem market to take off around interoperable, multi-vendor products. The evolution of this standard to include enhanced quality of service (QoS) and enhanced physical layers affords opportunities to deploy QoS intensive applications such as voice over IP, T1 circuit replacement, interactive gaming, multimedia enhanced services and video conferencing as well as address European deployment requirements. This paper addresses the DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1 and the new 1.2 standard and its evolving features, how it compares to the DVB-RC European proposal, and what QoS services and performance levels can be obtained. Detailed analysis of mixed QoS scenarios including multi-tiered committed information rate IP service and voice over IP are presented.

This paper describes a video up-converter integrated circuit designed for high-quality TV, projection and multimedia displays. The chip uses broadcast quality digital processing techniques such as interpolation and filtering to perform real-time up-conversion of an input digital video stream. The number of frames per second, lines per frame, pixels per line and scan rate of the digital video stream produced by the chip are fully programmable.

This paper describes the implementation of an HDTV decoder using a novel approach to system-on-chip (SOC) design developed to meet the demand for short time to market. The approach combines a complete definition of the application in a high-level object oriented language, an an advanced compilation system, and a configurable multiprocessor/VLIW platform.

We have demonstrated the world's first IEEE1394 S200 infrared (IR) wireless adapter and verified its operation. Our adapters enable us to communicate using low cost devices with sufficient eye-safety margin. Further, we have indicated a design approach to reach a transmission distance of 10 m while keeping an easy alignment property.

Based on the client-server application model, an MPEG-4 speech/audio streaming system over the Internet is implemented and demonstrated. This system provides an architectural prototype for carriage of MPEG-4 data over the IP (Internet protocol) network via the RTSP (real time streaming protocol) and the RTP (real time protocol). MPEG-4 natural audio parametric coding functionalities are fully explored for the coding of speech signals at 2 kbps to 4 kbps and the coding of non-speech signals at bit rates of 4 kbps up to 16 kbps. A set of MPEG-4 oriented RTSP feedback controls is utilized for client-to-server interactivity.
