Abstract According to the US Census Bureau, the 2019 population of the Village of Ossining, New York, was 24,812. Officially, “Hispanic or Latino” residents were 44.3% of the population—a percentage that has grown steadily since at least 1980, when it was less than 9%. One way this change is reflected is through the composition of the enterprises in Ossining’s main commercial district; in particular, through each store’s faҫade sign. This billboard-like display serves to identify and advertise the store. But what is it advertising, really? Why are some of the signs monolingual and others multilingual? Can diverse nationalities stake out a place for themselves through their signs? By analysing both their language(s) and paralanguage, some conclusions can be made about their (intended) meaning, their (intended) audience, and about the shifting language ideology in the village. The faҫade signs capture the diverse ethnic make-up of this village, constructing a particular public space and revealing a dynamic linguistic landscape.

Abstract One of the first written sources containing information about the Poqomchi’ language (Mayan family, Guatemala) is the trilingual Poqomchi’-Spanish-Latin dictionary dating from the beginning of the seventeenth century. Its author was a Dominican missionary, Dionisio de Zúñiga, although his work is based on earlier dictionaries of his predecessors. This paper analyses Zúñiga’s dictionary in the context of Dominican evangelizing tradition. Whereas the descriptions of certain lexical entries prove that the author was familiar with the culture and customs of the Poqomchi’ people, some other terms, specifically those denoting pre-Columbian deities and native religious concepts, seem to be derived from earlier missionary texts including Domingo de Vico’s famous Theologia Indorum. These intertextualities confirm the intellectual continuity among Dominican missionaries in Highland Guatemala during the early colonial period.

need to negotiate more within the prison. Garc ıa Madrid’s text is shown to describe more relationships than the other texts Fisher studies, which focus on the authors’ own internal struggles, and this is perhaps telling of the somewhat vulnerable roles these women had within the prison system compared to that of their Communist counterparts. There are several areas that pique interest and warrant further investigation, but, overall, Fisher’s work analyses the nuances of the prison narrative effectively and thoroughly. She recognizes these texts as a direct reaction to the Transition, and frames them within their broader contexts, such as the Communist life writing model and the need to confront the injustice that the authors were subjected to both during and after the dictatorship. The result is a fresh and valuable addition to the field of Spanish life writing, which provides a phenomenal introduction to these women’s stories, ensuring that their voices continue to be heard while also laying the groundwork for further investigation in this area.

Certain expectations may be confirmed whenever a new title on Fernando Pessoa appears... yet one might make a similar claim in respect of, say, Franz Kafka or Jorge Luis Borges. For the pantheon of celebrated modern writers is entered at a cost. Acolytes abound, bringing with them their literary proclivities: some biographists, others indispensable archival detectives, dedicated geneticists, or committed textualists determined to offer close readings including those, but few, who do so with recourse to the instrumentalities of complex critical theories. Rui Gonçalves Miranda, undoubtedly a pioneer of the latter approach, has guaranteed, in Personal Infinitive: Inflecting Fernando Pessoa, that it will be primarily those with an already deep awareness of Pessoa’s textuality, and an open-mindedness and readiness to deploy the most appropriate analytical tools, who will rise to the challenge of this ground-breaking study. Miranda’s engagement with the thinking of Mallarm e, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Barthes, Derrida, Eco, Barbara Johnson, and Terry Eagleton is never incidental and, in each case, the insights drawn upon are applied the better to explicate—never to explain away—the toughest nodal tropes exploited, inexhaustibly in Pessoa’s poetry and, judiciously explored here, his numerous other writings. As Roberto Vecchi observes in the “Foreword”:
