This review article draws connections between ideas expressed in some key presentations of the 6th International Conference of the Centre for Research on Social Innovations (CRISES). First, in reference to the lectures of Nancy Fraser and Lo c Blondiaux, we discuss the interconnectedness of crises (democratic, economic, ecological, and now sanitary). Then, in relation to the lecture by Janice Fine and the one by Dominique M da and Julie Battilana, we review transformations in the world of work and the challenges it faces in terms of social and environmental justice. Finally, in reference to the lectures of Flor Avelino and of Jean-Baptiste Comby, which we set up in dialogue with each other, we examine the capacity of social innovations to reproduce or transform power relations. We conclude our overview by drawing our own conclusions on what these analyses mean for our workas researchers.

La perspective du paradoxe gagne en popularité dans le champ de la gestion car elle rend justice à la complexité croissante de l’environnement dans lequel évoluent les organisations. Nous empruntons le concept de tensions paradoxales pour mieux saisir l’ambiguïté des tentatives du secteur coopératif pour démocratiser l’économie de plateforme. La précarité et l’hétéronomie du travail dans ce secteur sont des phénomènes largement documentés. Le coopérativisme de plateforme se pose alors comme alternative émancipatrice au capitalisme de plateforme. Cet article présente les résultats d’une étude de cas de la plateforme Eva, qui concurrence Uber au Québec. Constituée initialement sous la forme de coopérative de solidarité, Eva Coop est contrôlée par ses membres et intègre les chauffeurs à sa gouvernance. L’enquête de terrain explore la capacité du modèle coopératif à prévenir la précarisation au travail. Les résultats suggèrent que les contraintes fortes exercées par l’environnement concurrentiel et l’écosystème financier rendent les tensions paradoxales entre buts sociaux et économiques de l’organisation difficiles à réconcilier sans changements structurels.

Malgré des visées de transformation sociale, plusieurs organisations d’économie sociale (OÉS) adoptent des structures et des modes d’organisation assez conventionnels. À la tête d’une OÉS, on retrouve typiquement une seule personne qui assume la direction générale et qui relève d’un conseil d’administration. Nous observons toutefois l’émergence d’un mode d’organisation alternatif en OÉS : la codirection, où la fonction de DG est distribuée entre deux personnes ou plus se partageant les responsabilités dans des configurations à géométrie variable. Dans quel contexte la codirection émerge-t-elle? Comment s’organise-t-elle concrètement? Et quels en sont les avantages et enjeux? Notre recherche qualitative exploratoire menée auprès de huit OÉS ayant expérimenté la codirection permet d’offrir des réponses à ces questions initialement exprimées par les milieux de pratique. Elle permet aussi de contribuer aux réflexions sur la codirection en présentant quelques particularités en contexte d’OÉS et de se questionner sur le potentiel de transformation sociale d’une innovation sociale organisationnelle.

Rather than social innovation or the promotion of social and environmental justice, amplified by notions of “global Britain,” the British state continues to propagate a series of aging public service delivery initiatives, mostly based on private funding. Although before Brexit there was strong British influence on European Union policies for social investment, this influence also extends globally. At the heart of these initiatives is the British Council’s Global Social Enterprise program with its reports, mapping exercises, U.K. study tours, and resources available for social entrepreneurs. The Council supports regular articles in the online Pioneers Post, which extol the benefits of impact investment using private funds.

Résumé : Les personnes polyhandicapées subissent plusieurs formes d’injustices causées par les contingences naturelles et sociales. A travers l’exemple d’un processus de recrutement qui implique les résidants polyhandicapés dans la sélection des professionnels, nous allons analyser les leviers et les impasses d’une innovation organisationnelle participative dans une maison d’accueil spécialisée. En mobilisant le cadre des capabilités de Nussbaum, le paradigme de la reconnaissance de Fraser et l’apport des injustices épistémiques de Fricker, nous allons montrer qu’en offrant la liberté de choisir aux résidents, le dispositif produit des capabilités combinées. En assurant la parité de participation, le processus modifie les rapports et bouscule la hiérarchie des statuts. This article explores the contributions of a pragmatist approach to social innovation studies. It characterizes the epistemological assumptions of pragmatism and its implications to conceive of “science in action.” It explores the contributions of pragmatisms in developing a perspective to analyze civil society and its action to promote social innovation, focusing on the key notions of “public inquiry” and “democratic experimentalism.” The aim is to discuss the contributions, challenges, and limits of conducting pragmatic studies—from an analytical and methodological perspective—giving way to co-operative and engaged research that connects and co-ordinates teaching and knowledge transfer, theory and practice, experts and ordinary citizens, and knowledge and experiences in social innovation studies.

This article explores the problems and potential of funded short-term cross-sector partnerships to address technological deficits in the nonprofit sector by engaging with the partners of a concluded project. The partnership case study that forms the backbone of this article was a three-year nationally funded nonprofit-industry-academic partnership. The ob- jective of the partnership was to increase the data collection capacity of a national nonprofit organization and its affiliate centres through the development of a web-based app. This article highlights the challenges and differing experiences of nonprofit-industry-academic partnerships more generally, and technology-development partnerships more specifically.

L’article porte sur les Coopératives d’initiation à l’entrepreneuriat collectif (CIEC) au Québec, qui se veulent un projet d’éducation des jeunes à l’entrepreneuriat collectif. À partir d’une méthodologie qualitative combinant observation non participante et entretiens semi-dirigés avec les coordonnateurs des CIEC, nous explorons les conceptions de l’entrepre- neuriat collectif qui se dégagent du projet et les apprentissages expérientiels que les coordonnateurs cherchent à susciter chez les jeunes. Nous mettons en évidence plusieurs tensions et défis du projet CIEC qui, en cherchant à concilier in- sertion professionnelle, esprit d’entreprise, initiation aux entreprises collectives et sensibilisation à l’économie sociale et solidaire, risquent finalement de diluer ses impacts éducatifs.
