This paper focuses on the image of the Thirty Years War as it was depicted in Francisco de Quevedo’s only play, Como ha de ser el privado. The antagonism between Protestants and Catholics, one of the main conflicts of the Thirty Years War is illustrated through two of the main opposed characters of the play, the Transylvania ambassador and the prince of Denmark. Moreover, this article aims at demonstrating how Quevedo’s ideology, already expressed in previous works, has an impact on the events presented by the author in his play, creating a highly propagandistic ensemble.

This article tries to examine how Quevedo makes use of Lucifer (the devil, or the fallen angel) in his political treatise Politica de Dios and in his menippean satire Sueno del infierno in order to criticise the king and his minister (valido) when treating the polemical question of reason of State.

The author of this article analyses an unknown engraving by the Uruguayan Carlos Fossatti on the topic of Escarraman, trying to emphasize the relations between the text of Quevedo and the plastic hypertext of Fossatti, and the contribution of Quevedo’s jacaras to the specificity of the artistic and sociocultural context of the Uruguay around the years 1960-1970.

The essay analyses a corpus of three jacaras by Quevedo: two of them are letters (numbers 849 and 851), where a burlesque language predominates, and a third text —without the form of an epistle— which features vulgar and impudent expressions (number 864). There are few works known in Italy of this kind, with some gaps in their annotation, so their Italian translation appears to be a challenge, having no previous models to rely upon. The study reflects on the modalities for translating sentences or poetic fragments, suggesting the translation of culturally-marked images and terms, which are difficult to render in the target language. The aim of the work is to try to preserve the sharp humour, the burlesque charge and the iconographic focus of these Golden Age poems.

The topic of «privanza» was very important in the Spanish Literature of the 17th century. Don Alvaro de Luna represented the rise to power and the tragic fall of the «privados» or favourites. Quevedo wrote a poem around 1627 about the personality of the favourite in which he used his history to warn the Count duke of Olivares on the dangers of power. The buffoon adopts the role of a preacher and becomes the spokesperson of the author to give advice and recriminate the noble for his life. The critical and annotated edition of the «romance» will help us to know better Quevedo’s political and philosophical thought.

After reviewing the schematic structure of Francisco de Quevedo’s jacaras, based on a series of microcontexts —composed of external references and above all literary topics—, this article explains the introductory verses of the jacara number 7: «Vida y milagros de Montilla» (Blecua, num. 855, vv. 1-28). The article is focused on the historical references that appear in the text; then, a new dating is suggested, and new explanations are proposed for some obscure passages related to the punishment of galleys.

Panoramic and comparative study of the conceptual metaphor of man under siege in Quevedo’s work. The study shows the central andstructuring role of this concept in Quevedo’s thought and poetic imagination, in a triple dimension: ideological and political, natural and cosmic, individual and metaphysical. The study focuses on the moral sonnet «I looked upon my native country’s walls» as representative of this philosophical and poetic worldview. The sonnet is read through its presence in modern and contemporary thought and literature.
