This article offers a critical and annotated edition of La zurriaga, a hitherto unpublished text, part of the literary polemic triggered by Quevedo in 1632 with his attack against Perez de Montalban. This new text is an anonymous libel attacking Quevedo’s La perinola, while refuting some of the criticism levelled by Quevedo against Perez de Montalban’s Para todos. This critical edition is based on three manuscripts held in libraries in Madrid, one of which attributes the text to father Niseno.

The use of mummy meat as a therapeutic product was common in the Golden Age. Quevedo shows in his burlesque satirical poems that he knew it well, which allows us to properly interpret several dark passages of his poetry, some of them directed against his greatest adversary, Luis de Gongora.

The discourse of the pharmakon, or ambiguous antidote, permeates the early modern Spanish dramatic corpus and appears also in prose works by Francisco de Quevedo. One possible intertext for these references might be Erasmus’ Enchiridion. This would be surprising, because Erasmus’ text had been banned by the time Quevedo was writing; but we know he was aware of Erasmus’ work because he used Erasmus’ edition of Seneca, among other connections which have been demonstrated between these two writers. This essay examines patterns of intertextual borrowing, especially Quevedo’s probable (but unacknowledged) debt to Erasmus in several of his works. Even if Quevedo did not absorb Erasmian influence directly, he still could have had access to some of the same ideas through Saint Ignatius and the Jesuits as intermediaries. The last part of the essay looks at the Erasmian legacy in Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises and discusses New Historical self-fashioning as practiced by Quevedo.

This article takes up the matter of classifying Quevedo’s jacaras. Two criteria are proposed: one that follows the narrative structure and a second that deals with the predominant themes. In addition, the article studies questions of fencing and astrology in these works. These two disciplines are used by Quevedo to underline his own style of writing jacaras, one that is based on the dissonance between the popular and the learned. This contrast serves to transgress the principle of decorum in the themes utilized. Finally, the essay analyses the possible social and political implications that may emerge from the uses of fencing and astrology in the genre of the jacaras.

This article explores the poem «Consultacion de los gatos» following the Animal Studies approach. The analysis reveals that Quevedo goes beyond the anthropomorphist perspective to interpret animal figures that was customary in Golden Age literature. The author also highlights the abuse of the cat, another typical element of his period, to show compassion toward this animal, while criticizing the vices of its masters. Making the cat protagonist of the poem and showing its everyday life sufferings, Quevedo replicates closely the narrative model elaborated by Cervantes in Coloquio de los perros . As a result, Quevedo’s poem stands out among the satiric poetry that deals with animals in Golden Age literature.

The doubt about the origin of the "jacara" gender can throw different perspectives on its function and characteristics in the works of Quevedo. Initially, the "jacara" does not necessarily have a theatrical origin, but rather a lyrical one, when the poet begins its regeneration and strengthening. Just years later, with the intervention, among others, of Calderon de la Barca, the "jacaras" become fully dramatic and acquire the theatrical values that are few, if not null, in the difficult texts of Quevedo.

This study reflects upon La caida para levantarse , focusing in particular on its representation of Saint Paul as a transhistorical model of eloquence. Fusing his authorial project with the apostle’s auratic word, Quevedo endows his own writing with a providential stature. While thus engaging in a deliberate anachronism that obviates the differences between their respective historical horizons, he concomitantly foregrounds the relevance of Pauline language to the conflicted cultural context of the Counter Reformation. Addressed here are both the way in which Quevedo exploits the argumentative versatility already present in the rhetoric of his precursor, and the audacious manipulation entailed in his adaptation of the apostle’s millenarian discourse to the requirements of baroque ingenuity.

In this work the author identifies, analyses, and frames, within the larger Baroque concepts of political prudence and caution, some of the most representative direct and indirect references in Francisco de Quevedo’s Primera parte de la vida de Marco Bruto to the notion of duplicity in all of its variations (simulation / dissimulation). Additionally, and using as a starting point the ideas of Alessandro Martinengo and other researchers, the author tries to prove that the references to duplicity in the final section of the book, the «Suasorias», are critical to understand the connection between this part and the other two main ones, the «Discursos» and the «Cuestion politica», where this topic is absolutely key. In fact, it is believed that it would not be an exaggeration to describe Primera parte de la vida de Marco Bruto primarily as a political manual on prudence, caution, and, very much in particular, duplicity.
