Putting an End to Song: Penelope, Odysseus, and the Teleologies of the Odyssey 为歌曲画上句号:佩内洛普、奥德修斯和奥德赛的寓言

Abstract:Book 1 of the Odyssey presents us with the first bard-figure of the poem, singing what in many ways is an analogue to the Odyssey with “the return of the Greeks”; yet when Penelope appears, it is to attempt to put an end to his song. I use this scene as a starting point to suggest that Penelope is deeply implicated in narrative endings in the Odyssey. Looking at the end or τέλος of the poem through a systematic study of its “closural allusions,” I argue that a teleological analysis of Penelope’s character in relation to endings may both resolve some of the issues in her interpretation thus far, and open up new avenues for the reading of the Odyssey as a poem informed by endings.

Alexander Forte is lecturer in ancient and medieval studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research lies at the intersection of cognitive and historical linguistics, literary criticism, and intellectual history, with emphasis on the poetics of early Greek hexameter poetry. He is currently completing a monograph on Homeric metaphor.

Emily Hauser is lecturer in classics and ancient history at the University of Exeter. She is the author of a trilogy of novels reworking the women of Greek myth, and has written numerous articles on women poets in antiquity and their reception in contemporary women’s writing. Her research focuses on Greek poetry (particularly Homeric epic), women in antiquity, gender studies, and the theory and practice of classical reception, particularly in contemporary fiction. Her current book, Authoress: Gendering Poets in Ancient Greece, looks at the gendering of authorship in Greek poetry and is forthcoming with Princeton University Press.

Nick Ollivère earned his doctorate at the University of London. His research interests are in Latin literature of the late Republic and early Empire, particularly elegy. He has given papers on this topic using a variety of approaches, including those from philosophy, reception studies, and comparative literature. He currently works at Leiden University in The Netherlands.

Abstract:A study of the four instances of the adjective καίριος in Homer confirms what is traditionally taken to be the term's reference to a vulnerable site or place on the body, "un lieu critique" (Trédé 1992). At the same time, it suggests that even within this limited range of meaning, καίριος also implicitly incorporates connotations that only later emerge in the history of the noun καιρός, which does not appear in Homer. That conclusion is supported by the clear presence of the sense of "opening" or "aperture" in the instances of Homeric καίριος—a sense that John Onians (1988) and Bernard Gallet (1990) argue is fundamental to the meaning of καιρός. The connotations of καίριος include not simply spatial but also temporal, intentional, and situational references that together have bearing on how successful human action is understood.

Class and Gender in the Opposition to Nero 反对尼禄的阶级与性别

Abstract:This article investigates how class and gender figure in Nero's use of violence to obtain or manipulate information through analyzing two episodes in Tacitus's An. 14.59–64 and 15.51–57. In each case, women of varying social statuses become models of constantia under extreme physical duress. In the first instance, Octavia's servant women refuse to lie about their mistress's chastity and thus provide Nero with a legitimate rationale for his divorce. In the second, the freedwoman Epicharis staunchly refuses to inform against her co-conspirators involved in the Pisonian conspiracy. Tacitus uses these episodes to reflect upon the few, ennobling forms of resistance to Nero, and to provide female parallels to the Stoic opposition of Thrasea Paetus. Furthermore, both episodes illustrate Tacitus's concern with the freedom of speech (libertas) during the reign of a tyrant. Tacitus, at a loss for many models among elite men, finds incorruptible exempla in lower-class women.

Sed illae puellae: Transgender Studies and Apuleius's The Golden Ass Sed illae puellae:跨性别研究与Apuleius的《金屁股》

Abstract:Within scholarship on The Golden Ass, Lucius's time among the devotees of the goddess Cybele (8.24–30) is usually understood as one more picaresque episode that lambasts the depravity of the Roman empire, while its galli are rarely seen as more than as mincing punchlines. Here, bringing insights from transgender studies, I argue that when Lucius reports on the galli, he is unknowingly observing an alternative community of trans women rather than cinaedi. Further, a transgenderstudies reading of the novel recuperates the galli as developed characters with their own interiority and agency and allows us to see how their transing in Book 8 sheds light on Lucius's bodily and spiritual transformations later in the novel. As both historical figures and characters within the narrative, the galli set a compelling precedent for an ancient trans identity that conceives of the self as authoritative, without recourse to the physical body as a source of truth.

Abstract:This article argues that although the Iliad does not explicitly depict Achilles and Patroclus as lovers, the poem suggests an erotic dimension to their relationship by comparing them to husband-wife pairings in Homeric epic. Previous scholars have tended either to deny any erotic component to Achilles and Patroclus's bond or to assume that the Iliad unproblematically depicts them as lovers. Others have hinted at the possibility of a deliberate homoerotic subtext between the two heroes but have adduced little specific evidence other than the intensity of their emotional connection. In this article, I show that Achilles and Patroclus in the Iliad are analogous to a husband and wife by presenting specific examples from the text of how their relationship structure and affective bond mirror those of Homeric husband-wife couples. I conclude that the poem portrays Achilles and Patroclus's relationship as a conjugal bond in order to highlight Achilles' alienation from traditional social structures as well as the excessive and transgressive nature of his affective responses. I also suggest that Homeric epic presents the ideal conjugal bond as being characterized by the potential for power exchange and role reversal rather than by strict hierarchy.

RESUMEN El objetivo de este articulo fue resaltar las relaciones entre los miembros del Grupo Norte, en especial las de Cesar Vallejo, caracterizadas por profundos lazos afectivos que le dieron  a tal circulo notas de una fraternidad juvenil. Ellos cultivaron los valores cognitivos junto a los valores actitudinales, particularmente, el trato fraterno durante sus vidas. En el trabajo se une la reflexion  con la investigacion cualitativa en la modalidad de analisis de textos referenciales, para cuyo efecto se ha consultado fuentes de los propios personajes y otras obras. Palabras clave: valores, fraternidad, intelecto, afecto, ciencia, arte. ABSTRACT The aim of this article was to highlight the relations between the members of the North Group, especially those of Cesar Vallejo, characterized by deep affectionate ties that gave to such circle notes of a youth fraternity. They cultivated cognitive values alongside attitudinal values, particularly, fraternal treatment, during their lives. In this work, reflection is combined with qualitative research in the modality of analysis of referential texts, for which purpose, sources of the characters themselves and other works have been used. RESUMEN El presente estudio tuvo por objetivo determinar la influencia de la educacion emocional en el desarrollo integral de los ninos de cuatro anos, aula azulino, de la I.E. No 253 “Isabel Honorio de Lazarte”, Trujillo – 2019. Es un estudio basico, de enfoque cuantitativo, con diseno correlacional; la  muestra fue no probabilistica y estuvo integrada por veintisiete ninos de cuatro anos. Para el recojo de informacion de ambas variables se utilizo como tecnica la observacion, y como instrumento para la variable educacion emocional se aplico escala de habilidades socioemocionales para preescolares (EHSE), la cual contiene cuarenta items, de acuerdo a sus dimensiones: adaptacion, seguridad, participacion y cooperacion. Y el instrumento para la variable desarrollo integral, fue una lista de cotejo, que contiene treintaisiete items, de acuerdo a sus dimensiones: emocional, comunicativa y cognitiva. Los resultados obtenidos demostraron que existe una relacion de dependencia muy significativa (p<.01) positiva entre educacion emocional, manifestada en habilidades emocionales y el desarrollo integral en los ninos de cuatro anos, aula azulino, de la I.E. No 253 “Isabel Honorio de Lazarte”, Trujillo – 2019, dado que el coeficiente de correlacion de Spearman presento un valor de .682, con nivel de significancia muy alto .000 Palabras clave: Inteligencia, emociones, desarrollo.
