This article aims to show how Mayan ethnicity, race and sexuality of online sex workers —who inhabit in Mérida, Yucatán— are articulated. The sex workers observed —with brown skin, and of Mayan and Mayan-mestizo origin— hide their faces for “discretion”. Thus, sex workers are ethnoracialized by their Yucatecan or Mexican clients (and, to a lesser extent, by foreigners), as they are seen as hypersexual and childish; in their profile pictures they tend to appear naked and to show their penis, anus and chest; but only the thin and young ones can charge a fee of 700 or 800 pesos for the full service. Therefore, a Mayan sex worker who does not possess the aforementioned characteristics would probably have to offer anal sex without a condom in order to come close to the service fee of a brownskinned, thin, and young sex worker. This would seem to suggest that Mayan men are hypersexualized. This paper contributes to the understanding of the practices of contemporary Maya men’s sexualities from an ethnohistorical-racial perspective by analyzing how they engage in “performative” sexual practices (virtual and physical), which in turn are racialized and gendered in order to attract and keep clients.

Studies on the Maya elite mention the existence of titles, objects, gestures, and attitudes that symbolized the status and power of an individual or a social group, which are represented in Classic Maya monuments and objects. This paper briefly discusses the conceptualization of this kind of symbols and based on the studies that have been developed on the subject, the main characteristics that these symbols had among the Mayas of the southern lowlands during the Late Classic period are presented; this serves as a referential framework to evaluate the existence of social status indicators in the elite tombs explored in Yaxchilán between 1978 and 1985.

We wish to discuss some of the multiple Maya meanings that surround the human body and the role of its vital components in ritualized violence, specifically the forms of self-sacrifice and human sacrifice itself. This essay offers a series of elements of discussion that are key to detecting and understanding the transformations of the body and its components during ritual death along with the markers that give them away in the mortuary record; the proposals put forward here were thought from the perspective of data from the lowlands during the Late Classic period (600-800 ad), although it is feasible to assume that some aspects date from earlier tiemes or survived in more recent times.

The article analyzes social and cultural determinants that impact on access, adherence and timely follow-up of antiretroviral treatment of the Tseltal and Chol population with HIV in Chiapas and strategies of care and accessibility to treatment of support networks and health personnel. It contributes to the scarce existing research on non-adherence to antiretroviral treatment among indigenous peoples in Mexico and Latin America. The methodology is qualitative, based on a case study in an HIV care clinic (SAIH), during the period 2017-2018, with health personnel, users and family members, and is complemented with descriptive quantitative data on mortality and differential vertical transmission. The results demonstrate the impact on this population of the centralization of treatment in the SAIH, ofthe economic difficulties for travel, of the stigma and discrimination existing in their communities, and of the organizational culture of the SAIH. Strategies regarding care and/or pluralism of care are also identified. It is urgent to generate knowledge and specific measures from public policies and their implementation.

This paper re-examines the expressions síis k'ab (cold hand) and chokoj k'ab (hot hand) frequently mentioned in ethnographic descriptions of the hot-cold system among the Mayan-speaking population of the Yucatán peninsula. Using a linguistic-cognitive approach that integrates contextual information, the internal structure and semantic content of the expressions under study are explored. The analysis of the data obtained during fieldwork in the eastern part of the state of Yucatán allows us to draw two main conclusions: the first is that síis k'ab and chokoj k'ab constitute metonymies of the hand, and the second is that the metonymic use of this part of the body constitutes the basis of the metaphors k'ulu' k'ab (raccoon hand) and sayab k'ab (spring hand), whose analysis complements the present study. In addition, the connection between the identified metonymies and metaphors and a set of activities that to this day play a fundamental role in the daily life of Maya communities is outlined. Thus, the study contributes to broaden our understanding of metonymic and metaphoric patterns and processes in Yucatec Maya as well as of the local hot-cold system.

Siho is an archaeological site located in the Northern Maya Lowlands, where a number of grinding tools have been documented, mostly metates made with local limestone that has petrological characteristics (physical and chemical) which may indicate a particular geological origin. The statistical treatment of data extracted by X-ray fluorescence allows us to discern limestone materials from different geological formations, based on the quantity of silicon (Si) and/or calcium (Ca) in the sample. This data shows a link between the limestone of the Sihó metates and the rocks from the geological formation known as Carrillo Puerto located in the Yucatan peninsula. Furthermore, the comparison by mean thin sections between geological and archaeological materials has been useful to characterise and identify lithic materials used to fabricate the metates. The complementarity between both archaeometrical techniques, together with ethnographic, historical and archaeological documentation, provide us with information that suggests an immediate exploitation of the limestone rocks used to make the metates and brings us closer to a better understanding of the quarrying strategies practiced by the ancient Mayans of Sihó.

This research to determine the pre-Hispanic context of the Dresden Codex argues that it is Late Postclassic (1250 AD-Spanish conquest) and that it is not necessarily from the area of Chichen Itza. The conclusions modify the view of J. Eric S. Thompson, still highly influential after nearly fifty years, that it was painted in or near the settlement between 1200 and 1250 AD. Because the manuscript is a copy from Classic period sources, it is necessary to establish its date according to the most recent revision. This can be determined from a group of objects in the illustrations that are closely linked with Late Postclassic art. The study further supports interpretation of the period in neutral terms, not decadence.

There has been an increase in the amount of research that shows how migration status influences an increased risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS. The findings show that structural conditions of inequality lead to greater vulnerability. In Mexico, those who come from rural or indigenous populations face greater material shortage and abuses of their human rights. To achieve a better impact on prevention, less explored health promotion models need to be applied. The present work, carried out in two localities in southern Yucatan, shows how social marketing is a relevant and effective tool to build HIV/AIDS prevention strategies among the male Mayan population migrating to regional destinations. The research was carried out in two stages: a) the collection of data through the application of surveys that explore socio-demographic data, vulnerability factors, knowledge about HIV/AIDS and risk practices, which served as input for the second stage; b) the collaborative development of a prevention strategy based on Lee and Kotler Social Marketing model. With this we identified the desired outcomes for health; the threats to achieving those outcomes; the behavioral changes sought; the main barriers; the messages to be strengthened in interpersonal communication; the attitudes and knowledge that existed in response to the phenomenon. Finally, in collaboration with the participants we created a video and a play that were accepted in both communities.

The present work was developed in the Mayan community of San Sebastian Yaxche, Peto, Yucatan, with the objective of systematizing the traditional agricultural knowledge we found among milperos. Following a qualitative approach, from January 2018 through July 2019, we obtained information through semi-structured interviews with 16 milperos over 40 years of age. The results showed that a large amount of ancestral knowledge in the way their ancestors worked the milpa is still present in older people; therefore, it is urgent that they are transmitted to the younger ones through agricultural work, thus, avoiding their disappearance. This, thanks to the testimonies provided by the people interviewed.

A Possible [tze] Syllable and its Associates in Maya Writing

The decipherment of the Maya script is still far from completion and awaits the interpretation of a considerable number of logograms and syllabic signs. This paper is dedicated to the composite sign that has been previously considered a ligature of two syllabic signs, tzo and ko. The present analysis shows that these two graphic elements are never written separately and that the ko-like element differs from the other ko syllables attested in the corresponding inscriptions. The sign is found in the context of other syllables involving the mid-front e vowel, implying a previously unrecognized Ce syllable, with “C” standing for an unknown consonant. In Palenque, the sign follows the le syllable; the combination of these two signs is attested in the position of a predicate, which might be interpreted as the verb letz-e, “he/she climbed, went up”. The data collected allow us to propose the phonetic reading tze and fill one more gap in the Maya syllabic grid.
