Based on an ethnographically situated study of recent electoral processes in Argentina, this study contributes to the understanding of politics and political activities of which the protagonists- politicians and political activists or operators- refer to as the territorio or local level. Drawing on ethnographic observation from different contexts- both rural and urban areas-, the case is made for the need to rescue analytically the concept of agency and the importance of personal relations that both common sense and the scholarly literature often consider politically “weak”. An alternative approach is put forward for the future research agenda which centres on inter-knowledge in the use of technology used within the political work of political leaders, candidates and activists in the process of creating relations of political representation. In addition, the importance of understanding different scales of the local, the State and government are also analysed.

This article presents an analytical overview of the topic of political operators, politicians and political professionals drawing on the literature and empirical research including sociological approaches, ethnographic work and the specialized literature. Drawing on the sociology of political practice, a definition of political work is developed which centres on three aspects: the skills and practical abilities that politicians develop, the resources that are employed and the outputs of political practice. From here, we propose and dissect a range of key analytic dimensions (scales of action, resources, skills, careers and trajectories) to configure the objectives for research on this topic from the everyday practices of politicians and political professionals. Finally, we situate different modes of political practice within the broader social worlds in which they exist.

This article contributes to the literature on political practice through an anthropological analysis of public infrastructure projects in contemporary Argentina. We differentiate two socially significant perspectives for the actors involved: as political activists and the managers of public infrastructure projects. Reviewing both of these perspectives allows us to approach political work in relation to the social production of politics, and with that, break with the lens of hermeneutic cynicism through which public infrastructure projects are often viewed. The research on which this article draws is based on various ethnographic studies conducted between 1999 and 2014. Through the analysis presented in this article these studies are revisited in light of new research questions and focuses on the everyday practices of politics.

This article analyses the relations between politics and society during the so-called citizen’s revolution in Ecuador. Drawing on ethnographic research focused on political brokerage or the ‘art of serving’, the article analyses the particularities of political work by analysing the linkages and tensions that are constructed between the population of a suburb of the city of Guayaquil, the members of the governing political party of the Citizen’s Revolution, Movimiento Patria Altiva i Soberana (Alianza PAIS) and State functionaries. Meetings of political socialization and sectorial events- understood as institutional rituals- are taken as scenes in which to observe the interactions and the public performance of the protagonists of the pre-dominant political party in contemporary Ecuador.

Together with the discourse of difference, interculturalism has formed part of the political and pedagogical agenda in Ecuador over the past decade. With the intention of deepening the study of the uses and abuses of these discourses in bilingual-intercultural education, we present the results of an ethnographic research project on these issues. The objective of this research was to analyse to what point the recognition of difference and cultural diversity in public education policy is correlated with the actual practices of bilingual intercultural education. We also analyse the consequences these policies have on the situation of poverty and inequality faced by the indigenous population and to what extent these policies allow for the practice and construction of interculturalism.

This work analyses the interactions between the population of a Chilean comuna and two local authorities of the Christian Democrat Party: a former mayor and current municipal councillor. Through a diachronic analysis including in-depth interviews and political ethnography we analyse how concepts and practices around the exercise of politics are understood by these politicians and analyse ow they interact with the local population. We analyse how notions about politics, loyalty and the proper behaviour of an elected official are understood. Through the issues analysed we provoke the reader to rethink ‘clientelism’ and its role in everyday life and in state building at the local level.
