This article analyses politics at the local level through the perspective of a neighbourhood leader in Mexico City. Drawing on the comprehensive sociology approach and the study of a specific career trajectory, it analyses how a neighbourhood leader works to construct beneficiaries for neighbourhood level social programs and broker resources that would not be leveraged without their work. The analysis presents an alternative vision to other analysts who have emphasized the capture of public funds for electoral purposes by neighbourhood leaders. The objective is to invite researchers to rethink the role of the local political ‘broker’ or intermediary and to consider the complexity of this role. The moral and political dilemmas that condition the behaviour of such leaders are also considered. From here, without making a moral judgement, we consider how political brokerage and the activities that it involves combine instrumental considerations with moral and ideological dimensions.

This article analyses the multi-faceted character of political work based on research on political operators or armadores from the return to democracy onward in Argentina. It analyses the role of the Ministry of Interior and the political functions it performed for a long time through political ministry of the national cabinet and the tools at its disposal in confronting the challenges of political brokerage. The work involved in political brokerage between actors undertaken by the Ministry from 1983 onward is also analysed with particular attention focused on the differences across historical periods and the resources and skills involved in this process.

The principle objective of this article is to situate the analysis of the “bodily turn” within the study of “the visual”. This locates the researcher not as an objective observer at a distance but instead in another way of looking at and relating with the world. Instead of something “out there” the world is seen as something that affects us and that we also shape through our own perceptions. In this sense, the body is the axis that articulates, recognizes and repositions physical bodies as the fundamental axis through which anthropological research can be renewed in our continent. From these points of departure, the purpose of this article is to illustrate, articulate and share some of my experiences in the “how to” of ethnographic research on everyday life as a narrative and visual practice.

This study contributes to the discussion on the production of anthropological knowledge and the visual arts in particular fields such as design, installation and curation. The fieldwork was conducted in La Habana under the guise of the practice of curation as a site of ethnographic practice, method and theory building. In concrete terms, the study centres on an exhibition called Cultura Autoctona, with the objective of understanding the contemporary Cuban art scene and its repercussions for the production of practices involved in its politically critical social context. The design of the exhibition and curation process has contributed elements to the current debate within visual anthropology: understanding of the image as a process of inter-relation, more than of description.
