Abstract:Christoforos Savva, one of the most significant Cypriot artists of the 1960s, was also a highly politicized individual whose leftist worldview paralleled his artistic development. Nevertheless, this side of Savva has not been thoroughly explored. Savva created two forms of art: cementografia and ifasmatografia. Ifasmatografies were based on the vernacular tradition of weaving, while cementografies used modern cement, which was coming to replace stone in building construction. Savva's art departed from contemporary nationalist art production, such as that of the painter Adamantios Diamantis, and it also diverged from the Western colonial/orientalist projections depicting a premodern Cyprus. Overall, Savva's oeuvre bore all the hallmarks of contesting both Cypriot nationalisms—the Greek and the Turkish—since it was inclusive and anti-nationalist in its essence.

Abstract:A historical analysis of the state-led project of optimizing tobacco production in interwar Greece allows us to appreciate how the scarcity of capital, combined with the merchant-friendly stance of Greece’s authorities, placed a great burden on the peasantry. At the same time, dependence on German demand for Greek tobacco constrained the ability of state institutions to intervene in the tobacco sector. The scale of analysis proposed here enriches the historiography on Greek agriculture by overcoming some of the limitations of the approaches that emphasize quantitative data on productivity, output, and land use, without paying sufficient attention to the concrete impact of policy on the daily lives of the peasantry, the houses in which they lived, and their interaction with state officials.

Abstract:The concept of Hellenism featured extensively in modern Greek political and cultural life in the period from the turn of the twentieth century to the early 1930s. These four decades mark the transition from the national-imperial expansion of the modern Greek state to the management of the failure of the Greater Greece project. A systematic analysis of the writings of influential public intellectuals reconstructs the overlapping and contested political, cultural, and aesthetic languages of Hellenism that were mobilized to imagine Greece’s place in Europe and the world. The study of the permutations of Hellenism reveals the complexity of its meanings and highlights its multiple legacies throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
