Abstract Libraries recognize the necessity to continuously evaluate how well the collection supports the mission, goals, and priorities of the parent institution. This paper shares the results of the local citation analysis on engineering faculty research output from 2015 to 2019 conducted at De La Salle University. Scopus was used to harvest the documents published by the faculty as well as the list of all cited references in those records. The study aims to investigate how the engineering faculty are using publications, especially journals, for their research and determine how successful the collection is in supporting the research needs of the faculty. Findings will provide useful evidence for strategic planning in general and for making collection management decisions in particular

Abstract This study examined problems associated with unregulated access to Indigenous music materials in the public domain, utilizing the HathiTrust Digital Library as a case study. It focused on music materials and employed content analysis, and descriptive statistics as major methodological instruments. This study revealed the presence of musical notation as a primary condition rendering materials vulnerable to potential exploitation. This study confirmed that unregulated access may expose sensitive content protected under NAGPRA. Methodologically, this study offered a model of critical assessment of multi-institutional digitized collections. Substantively, it proposed strategies to support the protection of Indigenous content in HathiTrust.

Abstract Many academic libraries have historically limited textbook purchases. Given recent calls to support expanded online education programs and textbook affordability initiatives, however, many academic libraries have changed course to invest considerable amounts of money to license electronic books (e-books) that are assigned in courses. This study explores the value of these materials by leveraging commonly used evaluative methods, such as benefit-cost ratio and usage statistics, as well as novel criteria, including a quality analysis using Resources for College Libraries (RCL) and an analysis of the persistence of assigned titles across semesters. The findings suggest that assigned e-books are a wise investment of library funds within the authors’ institutional context. By investigating value from diverse perspectives, the authors assert the importance of approaching such a complex question with multimodal and inclusive methods.

BACKGROUND Thiamine deficiency often occurs in patients with alcohol abuse and unbalanced diets. However, gastric surgery and/or use of diuretics can also cause this situation. Importantly, thiamine deficiency can cause pulmonary hypertension, which is completely reversible. This report is of a case of a 67-year-old woman who presented with pulmonary hypertension and thiamine deficiency following partial gastrectomy and exacerbated by diuretics. CASE REPORT A 67-year-old woman with histories of partial gastrectomy because of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (at age 36 years) and sigmoid colectomy because of colon cancer (at age 58 years) presented with bilateral leg edema and dyspnea on exertion. Electrocardiography and right heart catheterization revealed pulmonary hypertension. Despite diuretic administration (initially indapamide, then changed to torsemide), the symptoms gradually worsened. Although she was neither an alcohol drinker nor a fussy eater, we found that her blood thiamine concentration was extremely low. We diagnosed her as having thiamine deficiency caused by gastrectomy and administered diuretics. After intravenous thiamine administration, her symptoms showed immediate improvement, associated with the normalization of the pulmonary hypertension. After detailed analysis of the cause of her pulmonary hypertension, including Swan-Ganz catheterization and echocardiography, we concluded that her pulmonary hypertension was caused by thiamine deficiency following partial gastrectomy and exacerbated by diuretics. CONCLUSIONS This case highlights the importance of recognizing that thiamine deficiency can be a cause of pulmonary hypertension, and that thiamine deficiency can be associated with gastrectomy and the use of diuretics.

Abstract This paper describes findings of a research project conducted at the University of Pittsburgh Library System to uncover processes used by early career researchers in the life sciences and engineering to locate information during the discovery phase and the role that social media and library-subscribed A&I databases play.

Abstract This literature review continues work done by Phyllis O’Connor in 1994. This review examines the literature surrounding library storage between the years 1995-2021 in order to identify trends, themes, and ideas that have emerged in the intervening years, as well as confirms themes and ideas that remain the same. Some of these themes include a deeper focus on metadata, collection maintenance after items have been transferred to storage, and issues of preservation. What remains constant is the need for communication with all stakeholders, and the importance library storage plays in providing access to patrons.

Abstract This study investigates the use of print titles purchased on approval and how quickly they become available as ebooks. Using this information, we explore the potential impact on patrons if the library was to move to a demand driven acquisitions process for print books. We found that at our library, the low overall usage of print titles received on approval indicates that patrons would be minimally inconvenienced by switching to this method in which records would be loaded into the catalog and titles would only be purchased when requested. Additionally, we found that the impact on patrons decreases over time as more titles become available as ebooks. Although differences exist between disciplines, overall findings show that a demand driven acquisitions process for print books would result in substantial budgetary savings without sacrificing patron service at our library. In addition to the description of our program, we describe some data analysis methods that can be used at other libraries in order to estimate potential impact on patron service and satisfaction.

Abstract The enactment of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) in 1990 marked a turning point for the stewardship and preservation of Indigenous cultural heritage materials. In the past 30 years, themes in library and archival collection literature have also shifted to emphasize decolonization, equity, diversity, and inclusion. This article provides an overview of scholarship on Indigenous and Indigenous-related research materials with evidence of advocacy and integration of decolonization methodologies in acquisitions, bibliographic sources and tools, digitization, access, and associated curriculum. Discussion of issues yet to be remediated and areas for further research are also presented.

Abstract This paper presents an analysis of decision-making in the context of judgment-based (subjective) deselection using decision theory concepts developed by Daniel Kahneman in collaboration with others. Judgment-based deselection is considered from multiple perspectives using this approach. Situating the deselection context within loss aversion, status quo bias, and the endowment effect (products of prospect theory and behavioral economics) may explain the psychological reluctance accompanying deselection. The role of feedback as a condition for developing intuitive expertise demonstrates the limited potential for developing expertise in subjective deselection. Heuristics and biases employed in decision-making and decision fatigue may account for inconsistencies in deselection decisions.
